Mets’ bullpen blows deGrom’s 13-strikout performance in loss

Jacob deGrom made another strong statement for his NL Rookie of the Year candidacy with Monday's record-setting strikeout performance against Miami. He struck out the first eight batters he faced — tying a Major League record older than he is — and finished with a career-high 13.

But in the end he was undone by the bullpen, taking a tough-luck, no-decision as the Mets suffered a 6-5 loss to the Marlins. It was the kind of vexing defeat to which the Mets have become all too accustomed.

Red-hot reliever Jeurys Familia (2-5) coughed up four hits and three earned runs to blow the lead and flush deGrom's sterling outing.

Those eight consecutive strikeouts to start the game matched the record set by Houston's Jim Deshaies on Sept 23, 1986 against the Dodgers. And deGrom finished allowing six hits, three earned runs and one walk. He's 8-6 with a 2.68 ERA and surging in his bid to overtake Cincinnati's Billy Hamilton for NL Rookie of the Year.

Since allowing a dozen hits and six runs in just 4 ¹/₃ innings at St. Louis on June 16 to fall to 0-4, deGrom has gone 8-2 with a sterling 1.77 ERA. And he looked set to keep up that pace Monday with a great start.

The Mets got an two-RBI double from Wilmer Flores in the first, and deGrom mowed down the first eight he faced until the opposing pitcher, Jarred Cosart, singled to right with two out in the third.

Eventually deGrom saw his 28-inning streak without allowing an earned run (dating back to Aug. 23) end when former Met Jordany Valdespin tied it with a two-RBI flare in the seventh, and Reed Johnson's pinch-hit sac fly gave the Marlins a 3-2 lead.

The Mets briefly retook the lead in the bottom of the frame with three unearned runs thanks to third baseman Casey McGehee's error to begin the inning. Consecutive RBI hits by Daniel Murphy to chase reliever Mike Dunn and Travis d'Arnaud off A.J. Ramos put the Mets back on top and Curtis Granderson's bases-loaded walk made it 5-3. But it didn't last.

Familia, who was second-best in the majors with 13 holds since the All-Star break, came on with a two-run cushion but couldn't hold this one. He allowed four hits — all singles — and was charged with three earned runs to blow the lead and flush deGrom's sterling outing.

Hechavarria, so overwhelmed by deGrom, singled to right to plate McGehee and Marcell Ozuna to knot the score at 5-5 and chase Familia. And Jeff Mathis singled to right off closer Jenrry Mejia to score Ed Lucas with the winning run.
