Everyone is re-watching the TD that wasn’t — except the Jets

During their film review of Sunday's loss to the Packers, the Jets players did not watch the play the rest of the world was talking about.

The 36-yard game-tying, fourth-down touchdown pass from Geno Smith to Jeremy Kerley that was not to be was left out of the film session because the play did not count. Although they did not watch it, the Jets did talk about what happened when Sheldon Richardson, thinking offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg wanted the timeout, called timeout from the sideline with 5:06 left in the game.

"It was brought up," wide receiver David Nelson said. "It was just one of those situations where it's better left unsaid. Now, it doesn't matter. All we know is it was called. It doesn't matter how or why. We have to move on. We can't worry about what might have been or it will drive you crazy."

That's where Jets fans were Monday as they relived the grueling 31-24 loss in Green Bay. The Jets blew an 18-point lead and watched Aaron Rodgers and Jordy Nelson carve them up to take the lead in the third quarter. But the Jets nearly tied up the game. Everyone watching thought they had tied the game, but the referee blew the play dead.

Rex Ryan said he rewatched the play and it was gut-wrenching.

"Absolutely," Ryan said when asked if it was tough to stomach. "It's a play you feel good about. Obviously, it's your No. 1 play in that situation, that's why you call it. It works the way we wanted it to work and then unfortunately it's blown dead."

The Jets did not make Mornhinweg available to speak to reporters after the loss, but Mornhinweg explained what happened Monday. He said after the fourth-and-4 play was called he did not like the alignment. Watching on film, it appears running back Bilal Powell lined up on the wrong side of Smith. Mornhinweg tried to get Ryan's attention to call a timeout. Ryan was on the defensive channel on his headset, so Mornhinweg ran down the sideline toward him, yelling. As he was running, Smith moved Powell to the correct spot in the formation, so Mornhinweg decided to let the play go and waved off the timeout. But Richardson never saw Mornhinweg wave it off, so he yelled in side judge Byron Boston's ear for the timeout, and Boston granted it.

Only a head coach is supposed to be permitted to call a timeout, but officials are instructed not to turn around if the snap is imminent and just grant the timeout. The NFL said Boston called the play correctly.

Mornhinweg said he wished he just trusted Smith.

"Everything that goes on offensively is my responsibility, period," Mornhinweg said. "I have to do a better job of communicating and then trusting big Geno. I've got to trust Geno to get everything fixed before the 40-second clock. That's the scenario. I was surprised the timeout was called."

Ryan was questioned about his sideline protocol, but he did not seem to have a problem with what Richardson did.
"We just want to win," Ryan said. "I think everybody is caught up in it and if you think you can help, you react like that."

While the timeout touchdown will be the play that will be remembered from this game, the Jets had plenty of other mistakes to point to in the loss. They even converted the fourth down after the timeout, but could not move the ball much further.

On Monday, the players went over how they squandered a 21-3 lead.

"It was lack of execution," Nelson said. "We were executing on all cylinders in the first half on all units. For whatever reason in the second half, it would be one unit not executing, then on the next play another unit not executing. When you're playing on the road and they have momentum, you just have to keep your composure. I think we had guys trying to step up, trying to make a lot happen on one play."

Smith said there were some positives in the game, but it was hard to dwell on them.

"We lost," Smith said. "That's just it. We lost. We didn't do enough."
