Wilmer Flores’ six RBIs propel Mets past Marlins

The Mets have been waiting all season for Wilmer Flores to show some power.

In the final two weeks of the season, he's finally providing it.

Flores had three extra-base hits and six RBIs in Tuesday's 9-1 win over the Marlins as the Mets avoided their fourth straight loss.

The outburst was unexpected, since until the last four games, Flores had just a dozen extra-base hits in 217 plate appearances.

But he had an extra-base hit in each of his previous three games (a double, triple and a homer), before collecting two more homers and a double on Tuesday. He matched a career-high with his six RBIs.
Bartolo Colon gave up just one run in 7 ²/₃ innings to improve to 14-12 and the Mets scored four in the fourth and never looked back.

Flores had an RBI double in the fourth, delivered again in the fifth with a three-run homer to left and added a two-run shot in the seventh.

And Colon rebounded from his shortest outing of the season, when he lasted just three innings in a loss to Washington.

Juan Lagares left Tuesday's game before the fifth inning with a hyper-extended right elbow. It was unclear how Lagares suffered the injury and he was replaced in center field by Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Lagares had been hitting well of late, with seven hits in his previous 16 at-bats before Tuesday's 0-for-2.

Dilson Herrera didn't play in part because the second baseman was in an 0-for-13 slide.

"He's really scuffling right now and I don't know if it's fatigue," Collins said of the rookie. "I don't want him to think he's overmatched. … He's done a nice job, but we're seeing the wear and tear of what a whole season can do to a guy who's never done it before. … Lucas Duda snapped an 11 at-bat hitless streak with two hits.

The Mets logo was altered on some of their social media accounts, first noticed on Tuesday, but the team said it wasn't intending to change it.

The United Nations headquarters was replaced by the angled Citigroup building, but by Tuesday evening, the logo had been switched back to its original design.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig said he was unaware of an official change.

"We haven't talked about it," Selig said at a press conference at Citi Field before the game. "I don't think that will happen. … The Mets have always been a franchise that has played very much by the rules and I don't believe they would do anything without my knowledge."
