Fisher, Knicks ticked at showboating Wizards after rout

WASHINGTON — Knicks coach Derek Fisher seemed pumped at the morning shootaround about president Phil Jackson and general manager Steve Mills jacking up offseason hopes during Thursday night's season-ticketholder presentation.

"We control our own destiny,'' Fisher said. "I'm excited about that.''

But that's in the future; the present tastes like moldy pizza for the Knicks rookie coach, who suffered through a 30-10 disaster of a first quarter Friday against the Wizards, as the Knicks were outrebounded 18-5, followed by the final indignity of a last-second dunk that ruffled Fisher's feathers.

Fisher seemed ticked off the Wizards appeared to rub it in at the end with one last emphatic jam by Rasual Butler with 1.3 seconds left to cap a 101-87 rout at Verizon Center. Fisher called timeout, ostensibly to give his team a chance to learn from running a final last-second play, but more likely to force Washington to mill around an extra minute.

The Butler dunk was met with roars from the crowd because it earned the fans half-priced pizza for breaking 100 points.

"They dunked it at the end there,'' Knicks center Lou Amundson said. "I don't know if that was needed. I don't know if that was it [the timeout].''

According to an eyewitness, the Wizards' Drew Gooden came over to the Knicks' bench to apologize.

Fisher was asked if the Wizards should have run out the clock.

"Some teams run it out; I've seen it go both ways,'' Fisher said. "We're in that position right now. But it won't always be that way. We'll have those nights we'll have that choice.''

"The pizza doesn't taste that great,'' Fisher added, perhaps alluding to the promotion.

As for the first quarter, Fisher said, "We were punched in the face right away to start the game.''

Before the game, Fisher was asked about SMU coach Larry Brown's remark that Kentucky would make the Eastern Conference playoffs. Of course that insinuation is Kentucky could handle the league's worst team, the Knicks.

"Obviously Larry is an accomplished coach and has a feel of the game on both levels,'' Fisher said. "He's entitled to his opinion. College kids are great. High school kids are great. But these are still grown men. Whether they could or couldn't, who knows? It's fun to talk about."

"John Calipari is a great coach. He probably could coach in the NBA. It's like the whole team will be in the draft. So maybe they could.''

Ricky Ledo led the Knicks with a career-high 21 points, nine rebounds and three assists while Tim Hardaway Jr.'s return from a nine-game absence due to a wrist sprain was a disaster (0-for-7). Andrea Bargnani also was brutal (1-9, two points). For the Wizards, John Wall had a career-high 18 assists. … Jackson said at Thursday's season-ticketholder junket that Knicks fans should want to focus on the Final Four, indicating their draft pick could be there in either Kentucky's big man, Karl-Anthony Towns, or Duke center Jahlil Okafor. Judging by Jackson's remarks on needing a defensive big, the Knicks could be interested in Kentucky's best big man — defender Willie Cauley-Stein — if they fall to the third or fourth pick.

Jackson appeared to hint he favored Towns over Okafor when he said it's more important for the Knicks to land an active defensive big — such as Tyson Chandler — rather than a scoring center. Okafor has been criticized for his lazy defense.

"I think there's a balance to it,'' Fisher said. "You definitely need active bigs, good on the defensive end. Maybe not a prototype big but also in vogue, the kind of versatile forward who can cover three, four, five positions. We'll have our choice of a lot of really good players. For sure I've talked about defense from Day 1. For many reasons, we haven't been able to be consistent on that end.''
