Discovery Channel, known for male-driven reality shows about grizzled fishermen, gold miners and car mechanics, is getting in touch with its feminine side.
New channel chief Rich Ross, a former Disney executive who joined Discovery in January, said he is looking to broaden the channel's appeal and diversify its programming.
"We need to welcome everyone," Ross told The Post after unveiling the channel's new lineup to media on Tuesday.
A new special called "Elevation Weekend" will take a small step in that direction by featuring both male and female climbers scaling the world's toughest peaks.
Ross, who had the most success when he was head of Disney Channels Worldwide, is pushing into scripted programming as well, with a behind-the-brand series on the founders of legendary motorcycle company Harley-Davidson.
The channel also highlighted "Racing Extinction," a politically charged documentary about a team of activists who infiltrate black markets in endangered species.
Despite some departures, Discovery offered up new shows that follow the same "Bering Sea Gold" formula, including "Pacific Warriors," about Hawaiian commercial fisherman, and "Treasure Quest," about a group hunting for gold in Brazil.
David Zaslav, the head of parent Discovery Communications, predicted the spring up-front market — when TV programmers sell the bulk of their ad time — would be better than last year but not gangbusters.
