Wheeler’s elbow an issue as 2 more Mets pitchers go down

PORT ST. LUCIE — Triple ouch.

A Mets team that was overflowing with healthy young arms just a few days earlier received another whammy on Friday, when club officials disclosed Zack Wheeler has soreness in his right elbow and Vic Black underwent an MRI exam on his right shoulder.

The disclosures came just a day after Josh Edgin returned to camp facing a choice between season-ending Tommy John surgery and rehab on the stretched ligament in his left elbow.

Test results on Black's shoulder weren't immediately available, and Wheeler has been scratched from his scheduled Saturday start against the Nationals with what general manager Sandy Alderson is calling tendinitis.

Adding to Wheeler's troubles is a recurring blister on his right index finger, underneath the nail.

If there is a silver lining, at least for now, Alderson said Wheeler will not need an MRI exam on the elbow.

"This is something that he experienced during the course of last season as well, and it was managed," Alderson said. "That is what is expected this season."

Wheeler is expected to miss just Saturday's start, according to Alderson, and then return to the rotation. But the team also will monitor his blister problem.

The right-hander has battled blisters throughout his professional career. Two years ago, he underwent an MRI exam on his index finger at Triple-A Las Vegas in an attempt to find the root of the problem.

Wheeler struggled in his first start of the Grapefruit League season, allowing six earned runs on two hits two walks and two hit batters last Saturday against the Marlins. He later gave no indication he was hindered physically.

"It's sort of an intermittent issue that he has to manage, so we don't expect that it's going to be a major issue," Alderson said.

Black has appeared in two games his spring and recently incurred soreness in the shoulder, prompting the MRI exam. The Mets shut down Black last season in September because of soreness in his right rotator cuff.

Edgin on Friday said he will receive a second opinion on his elbow from Dr. James Andrews in the next few days.

The lefty reliever is weighing whether he should undergo Tommy John surgery or try a rehab program to strengthen the ligament, which is rubbing against a bone spur in the elbow. Even if Edgin takes the latter course, he almost certainly would begin the season on the disabled list.

"I'm still in the gray area, so I don't know which way I'm going to go or anything like that," Edgin said. "The best outcome would be this rehab will work and I'm looking at it optimistically and prepared for both ends of the spectrum."

With Edgin sidelined, the Mets are without a primary lefty option in the bullpen. Dario Alvarez, Scott Rice, Jack Leathersich and Sean Gilmartin are the other lefty relievers in camp.

Edgin said he doesn't want to delay his decision too long.

"The worst-case scenario is Tommy John surgery," he said. "Looking at that scenario, I want to be ready for next year, so I want to make the decision [soon]. If it's worst-case scenario, I want to be back by April 1 next year to start the season."

Wheeler's elbow soreness perhaps underscores Dillon Gee's value to the team as a proven arm who can fill a spot in the rotation. Gee has been working from the bullpen in camp, but still is considered next in line for a rotation spot, even with prospects Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard in the pipeline.

In the bullpen, Bobby Parnell is expected to miss the first month of the season as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery, and the probable absence of Edgin might allow Rafael Montero to make the team as a reliever.
