Fourteen people who filed grievances after they were fired late last year as part of the down-sizings at the New York Times have reached a settlement and avoided arbitration.
Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet, who was seeking to cut the newsroom headcount by 100, selected staffers to cut loose when not enough volunteers stepped forward.
Those sent to the showers did not receive nearly as generous a payout as the volunteers.
The Newspaper Guild, which represents journalists, was sharply critical of the selection process.
"Based on the Guild's reading of hundreds of performance reviews, it seemed that the Times had made mistakes in deciding who to let go," the Guild said.
The 14 who reached settlements were seeking more lucrative payouts.
A Times spokesperson did not return calls for comment by deadline.
