Mets’ Syndergaard slips up in 1st start with new spotlight

FORT MYERS, Fla. — By all accounts, Noah Syndergaard is still heading to Triple-A Las Vegas for Opening Day.

Despite that, there's no getting around the significance to his development now that Zack Wheeler is likely having Tommy John surgery.

Syndergaard had a chance to show he could get major-league hitters out on Monday when he faced a lineup laced with big names and after mowing down Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino and Xander Bogaerts in order in the fifth, he struggled in his second inning of work.

"I started falling behind batters and you start getting more predictable," said Syndergaard, whose problems started with a long homer by minor-league catcher Matt Spring and a long triple by Mookie Betts.

"After that, I feel like I settled down," Syndergaard said.

He still walked David Ortiz after that.

"You follow him as a little kid and it's pretty awesome to pitch to him," Syndergaard said. "I think I just wanted to get him out so badly that I got out of my mechanics."

He says he won't alter his approach even with a possible promotion to the majors more attainable without Wheeler in the rotation.

"My mind-set doesn't change," Syndergaard said. "I'll compete for a job."

That opportunity may have to wait.

"We like Noah a lot," Terry Collins said. "He's going to be a real good pitcher. There's going to be a time when we're going to have some hard-throwing guys in the middle of that rotation."

It just might be Syndergaard for a while.

"When we get toward the end [of spring training], there's going to be some discussions we'll have with Noah about what we think he's got to do to be in the mix," Collins said. "If you get sent down, you've got to pitch your way out of it."

So far, pitching coach Dan Warthen has liked what he's seen.

"He's been exceptional," Warthen said. "The kid is on his way. He's really throwing the ball well."

And, as the Mets know all too well, plans can change in a hurry.

"We've still got three weeks," Collins said of spring training. "There could be something else where all of a sudden we're just going to put one in the rotation."

Dillon Gee is slated to pitch at home against Houston on Thursday in a split-squad game, with Jon Niese facing the Cardinals in Jupiter. If Gee does indeed move into the rotation, the Mets will have another hole to fill in the bullpen, with injuries and ineffectiveness already having taken a toll.

No one in the bullpen, from Jenrry Mejia to Jeurys Familia to Bobby Parnell, can be counted upon as a sure thing. Parnell is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game Tuesday, his first game action of the spring as he returns from Tommy John surgery.

Michael Cuddyer continues to hit, adding a single and a double to his spring training totals. John Mayberry, Jr. also had a pair of hits and his second-inning single drove in Cuddyer.
