Documentary producers handed over Durst evidence ‘months ago’

The producers of "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" say they gave cops the evidence they had unearthed on Robert Durst "months ago'' and don't understand why he was not busted sooner.

"The truth is that we hoped Robert Durst would be arrested as soon as possible,'' Andrew Jarecki, director of the six-part HBO documentary, told "CBS This Morning" on Monday. "And we were sort of amazed ourselves that he hadn't been arrested for so long.''

Jarecki said he and his filmmaking partner had been in touch with cops for the past two years about Durst, the suspected murderer at the center of their documentary series, which aired its final episode on Sunday.

But Jarecki wouldn't say exactly when they turned over information about a letter that appeared to tie the nutty real-estate heir to the 2000 murder of his friend and spokeswoman, Susan Berman, in Los Angeles.

Jarecki also wouldn't reveal precisely when the contents of an audio recording — in which Durst is heard in a bathroom saying, "What the hell did I do? Killed them all'' — were shared with cops.

He and partner Marc Smerling only said in a statement, "We can confirm that evidence (including the envelope and the washroom recording) was turned over to authorities months ago.''

Los Angeles cops didn't move in on Durst until Saturday, prompting some to question whether the timing of the arrest was part of a deal to boost the show's ratings.

"Do I think this is a coincidence? Hell, no," one of Durst's lawyers, Dick DeGuerin, told The Los Angeles Times.

But Jarecki and cops scoffed at the notion.

"A, we don't have that kind of power,'' the director told ABC's "Good Morning America.'' "We're not in charge of the arrest timing, and we had no idea of the arrest timing."

Law-enforcement sources suggested the LAPD was still mounting its case when it got wind that Durst might try to flee after Episode 5 aired last week.

But Jarecki and HBO were cagey about another issue — why the documentary went to great lengths to suggest its second interview with Durst occurred in 2013, after his arrest for trespassing outside his brother Douglas' Hell's Kitchen home, when the director said Monday that it took place in April 2012.

Neither Jarecki nor HBO responded to questions about the potential credibility issue.

When pressed by the Times on Monday, Jarecki said, "I think I have to get back to you with a proper response on that.''
