In the not-too-distant future, we'll expect a lot more from our clothing.
It will do more than just hang off our bodies and keep us from getting arrested for public nudity. Imagine underwear that monitors your body's vitals or a shirt that lights a room.
Those days aren't quite here yet, but there are wearables that do more than just look smart. The Post road-tested four shirts that offer features well beyond the average Gap pullover.
Vardama
Price: $125-$155 at vardama.com

Result: Shirts have a slim, modern cut and the fabric doesn't feel particularly plastic-y. You might not know it's stain-resistant. And yet, dump a cup of coffee on the sleeve and the liquid magically beads. Any residual stain was easily washed out with a run under a faucet.
Betabrand Ready
Price: $108 at betabrand.com

Innovation: Made for men who fancy themselves equal parts "junior executive, James Bond and CrossFit warrior." The cotton-poly blend is stretchy and designed to give more freedom of movement so the wearer can run straight from the boardroom to his living room if he likes. Fabric is moisture-wicking.
Result: It's got a stylish slim fit, and the material is far more comfortable than the average dress shirt. Not sure you'd want to hike for days in it, but it allows for movement while still looking modern. Only knock: Tail is a bit long to wear untucked.
MagnaReady
Price: $65 at magnaready.com

Innovation: Created by Maura Horton, whose husband has Parkinson's disease and had trouble buttoning his shirt. The front opening and the cuffs have magnets sewn into the fabric so they snap closed automatically.
Result: Oxford-style shirt is 100 percent cotton and more traditionally cut. The magnetic closures work fine and are virtually undetectable to others' eyes. As for the company's claim that buying one will "shave minutes off the morning getting-ready process?" Minutes? How many buttons do they think are on the average shirt?
Takino Nanotech
Price: $100 at takinoshirt.com
Photo: Anne Wermiel/NY Post
Innovation: The button-down has 10 hidden pockets inside to hold your phone, wallet and passport, without looking bulky.
Result: The two-ply, cotton-poly-blend shirt is noticeably thicker than a normal button-down, and its cut is fairly generous, which makes concealing items possible. The only difficult part? Reaching inside to get your items out without unbuttoning the shirt. If you're looking to avoid getting pickpocketed, though, this is the shirt for you.
