"Empire" star Jussie Smollett on Monday decided to end the speculation about his sexuality, coming out as gay in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres.
On the hit Fox drama, Smollett plays Jamal, the middle singer/songwriter son of the Lyon family, who is also gay — leading to questions about the actor's own sexuality, which he had previously refused to discuss in interviews.
"There is no closet, there's never been a closet that I've been in," he confirmed to DeGeneres in a backstage interview posted Monday. "I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home. So that's why I choose not to talk about my personal life.
"Let's not read into it in the wrong way when I say that I don't talk about my personal life," he continued. "I'm saying that, but it is in no way to hide or deny who God made me … We're human and we love and we do all that good stuff."
Smollett's statement comes after his "Empire" co-star Malik Yoba was accused last week of outing him in an interview, though the actor downplayed it, saying he was misquoted and was referring to Smollett's character.
Jamal's sexuality has played a key role in the series' first season, with the character publicly coming out to the hip-hop community through a song in episode eight, despite threats from his homophobic father, Lucious (Terrence Howard).
