Anna Wintour's Vogue snagged Magazine of the Year honors at the National Magazine Awards, also known as the "Ellies," Monday night.

However, in a clear sign of the industry's transition, digital publications were also scoring key awards and creating a lot of excitement as the American Society of Magazine Editors handed out 18 awards in 24 categories. The digital insurgents have not totally elbowed aside the traditional legacy winners just yet, but the ASME judges are clearly looking to open the door wider.

The biggest Ellie winners were print stalwarts: Adam Moss' New York magazine and David Remnick's New Yorker, which tied for the lead with three awards each. The event, held at the Marriott Marquis, was hosted by David Muir, anchor of ABC News' "World News Tonight."

The upstarts are clearly leaving their mark in an industry that is in a state of transition. Janice Min, president of Guggenheim Media, was on hand to accept the first-ever award won by The Hollywood Reporter — for general excellence in the special-interest magazine category.

Min pointed out that event was being held the same night as THR's Oscar nominees party. "Winning this makes me feel much less ridiculous for not being there," she said.

As Min's thank-yous dragged on, music began playing to let her know she had reached the end of her allotted time. "Now I'm being played off. This really is the Oscars of magazines," she quipped.

One of the bigger surprises at the ceremony was the best feature writing award snagged by the Atavist writer James Verini's article "Love and Ruin," about a legendary Afghani archeologist.

The Atavist publishes one long article a month for a $2.99 access fee and is something of a hybrid between an e-book and a digital magazine.

Evan Ratliff, CEO and editor of Atavist, said upon accepting, "I'm a little stunned" and that he hadn't prepared anything to say, but noted that Verini had "poured his life into this story."

Vice won the top video award for "The Islamic State" by Medyan Dairieh, in a category that is becoming increasingly competitive as magazine companies strive to present themselves as media content players.

Hottest newcomer was Nautilus, an online science magazine started by John Steele. Editor Michael Segal noted on accepting, "Wow, wow, wow. Two years ago Nautilus consisted of publisher John Steele and myself."

Editor Michael Siegal noted on accepting, "Wow, wow, wow. Two years ago Nautilus consisted of publisher John Steele and myself."

Nautilus also won for Web site, becoming the only mag to win two awards in its first year of eligibility.

The New Yorker won for general excellence in the General Interest category, one of three wins for the Condé Nast-owned weekly, which also was also honored for a Roger Angel's "This Old Man" with a win in the Essays and Criticism category and for fiction writing for Donal Antrim's "The Emerald Light in the Air."

A standing ovation went to Angel, who beat out, among others, Monica Lewinsky's piece in Vanity Fair. Remnick called him "the greatest baseball writer ever."

New York also earned another mutliaward night with three wins; design; columns and commentary and magazine section for its popular "Strategist" section.

Other general-excellence category winners included: Glamour (service and lifestyles magazines); Garden & Gun (style & design mags); and Men's Health (active interest magazines).

The longest ovation of the night went to James Nachtwey, a Time foreign news photographer who has been a contract photographer for the magazine since 1984. He has covered conflicts from Northern Ireland to the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center to West Africa, the Balkans and Afghanistan. He lost his right hand in Iraq in 2003 when a grenade was thrown into his Hummer.

Nachtwey said he was accepting the award on behalf of all photographers who chronicled upheavals, and to the same subjects who lost their lives or were imprisoned.

"We're the point people," he said. "We get our hearts broken by what we witness over and over again." But he said that ultimately, the photos are aimed at "our readers' best instincts, their generosity, compassion and sense of what is right and wrong."
