The Nets must have been inspired by the Patriots.
A day after New England snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to win Super Bowl XLIX, the Nets did the same, going on a 12-2 run over the final 71 seconds to come from behind and stun the Clippers, 102-100, in front of 16,037 who braved the elements to make it to Barclays Center.
Less than two weeks ago in Los Angeles, the Clippers cruised to a 39-point win, a margin of victory that felt like twice that much.
While this one was far more competitive, it looked like it would end with the same result when DeAndre Jordan tapped in a missed Chris Paul floater to give the Clippers a 98-90 lead with 1:11 remaining.
Apparently no one told the Nets, however, who surged back into the game behind a 3-pointer from Deron Williams — playing his first game since Jan. 7 due to fractured rib cartilage — and then another from Joe Johnson. After Johnson missed a pair of free throws, Brook Lopez grabbed the offensive rebound to make it 98-96 with 48.1 seconds left.
After Paul missed a pull-up jumper, the Nets got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead — just as they did late in overtime in Friday's loss to the Raptors. But while Bojan Bogdanovic's corner 3-pointer in Friday's game missed, dooming the Nets to defeat, Alan Anderson's shot from almost the exact same spot Monday not only went in, giving the Nets a 99-98 lead with 15.3 seconds left, but he was fouled by Blake Griffin who fouled out on the play.
Anderson made the free throw to complete the four-point play and give the Nets a two-point lead, but Paul drove past Williams to tie the game at 100 with a layup with 8.6 seconds left, giving the Nets yet another chance to win a game at the buzzer.
Unlike nearly every other time, though, coach Lionel Hollins put the ball in the hands of someone besides Johnson, giving Jarrett Jack the ball and running a pick-and-roll with Lopez. After Jack got the defensive switch he was looking for, he knocked down a mid-range jumper with 1.3 seconds left to give the Nets a 102-100 lead.
The Clippers still had one chance to tie or win the game, but after the ball was inbounded to Spencer Hawes he inexplicably tried to pass it to the corner, the ball was tipped and the Nets (19-28) snapped their four-game losing streak, getting their first home win since Dec. 29.
Lopez led the Nets with 24 points, while Johnson had 22 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Jordan led the Clippers (33-16) with 22 points and 20 rebounds, while Paul had 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, Griffin had 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists and Jamal Crawford had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench.
