Brady, Patriots rally to win epic Super Bowl XLIX

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The only thing deflated at the end of Super Bowl XLIX was the Seahawks.

Russell Wilson threw a final-minute interception and Tom Brady led the Patriots in a comeback for the ages as New England scored 14 fourth-quarter points to beat Seattle 28-24 in an epic Super Bowl.

It looked as if it would be the Seahawks celebrating their second straight championship as they marched down the field in the final two minutes. Jermaine Kearse made a miraculous 33-yard catch that would have made David Tyree jealous. The ball seemed to bounce off his body six times before he caught it at the Patriots' 5-yard line with 1:06 left to play.

Two plays later, Wilson tried to go to Ricardo Lockette for the game-winning touchdown, but Patriots corner Malcolm Butler jumped the slant route and intercepted the ball to seal the Patriots' win with 20 seconds left.

The play call was bizarre and ill-conceived. The Seahawks were at the Patriots' 1-yard line with Marshawn Lynch running through the Patriots defense. Instead of just handing it to him, they tried the pass and paid the price.

After two weeks of questioning whether Brady and coach Bill Belichick cheated, they answered with their fourth Super Bowl title together and first in 10 years. Brady was absolutely brilliant, completing a Super Bowl-record 37 passes on 50 attempts for 328 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.

Brady's brilliance was on display on a 10-play, 64-yard drive that ended with him throwing a 3-yard touchdown to Julian Edelman with 2:02 remaining in the game. Brady was named MVP of the Super Bowl, the third time he's received the honor.

The Seahawks led 24-14 after three quarters, appearing to be in total control after Doug Baldwin's 3-yard touchdown from Russell Wilson with 4:54 left in the third quarter. That scoring drive was set up by a Bobby Wagner interception of Brady, his second of the game. It seemed as if the game would be remembered for two Brady turnovers. Instead, Brady cemented his legacy as one of, if not the, greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

Brady led the Patriots back first with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Danny Amendola to cut the Seattle lead to 24-21 with 7:55 to play. The pass was Brady's 12th career touchdown pass in the Super Bowl, breaking Joe Montana's record.

The Patriots defense held the Seahawks to a three-and-out to give the ball back to Brady and the offense at their own 36 with 6:52 to play. Tight end Rob Gronkowski had two huge catches of 20 and 13 yards that led to the Edelman touchdown.

The game was controlled by defense for most of the first half, but not the one everyone expected. The Patriots defense was the one that looked like the best in the NFL. They frustrated the Seahawks early on, holding them to minus-2 passing yards in the first quarter. Wilson did not complete a pass until there were 5 ½ minutes left in the second quarter.

The way they were: Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio's 61st anniversary 17 Photos

Take a look back at Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe's legendary romance on their 61st wedding anniversary.

The strategy for the Patriots on offense was clear. They went to work on the underneath zones of the Seattle defense. Brady found running back Shane Vereen and wide receivers Amendola and Edelman repeatedly with short passes. Vereen had 7 catches for 42 yards in the first half, Amendola 4 for 44 and Edelman 3 for 41.

Brady made one huge mistake early in the game, throwing a rare red-zone interception. With 1:39 left in the first quarter, under pressure from Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, Brady lofted a pass toward the end zone that Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane picked off. It was Brady's first postseason interception since the 2007 AFC Championship game against the Chargers.

For Lane, it was his first career interception, but it was costly. He injured his left forearm and did not return to the game.

That became critical quickly as Brady went to work on Tharold Simon, who replaced Lane. First he found Edelman for a 23-yard gain on third-and-9 against Simon that put the Patriots back in the red zone. This time, they cashed in. Brady hit Brandon LaFell with an 11-yard touchdown on a hard slant pattern against Simon. The pass gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead with 9:47 left in the half.

Wilson finally broke through against the New England defense, finding Kearse for a 6-yard gain with 5:36 left in the second quarter. It was his first completion, after throwing two incompletions, taking two sacks and scrambling on a few plays. Two plays later, Wilson found Chris Matthews for a 44-yard gain. Matthews made a beautiful catch over Kyle Arrington. It was the first reception in the career of Matthews, who did not join the active roster for Seattle until December.

Lynch finished off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7 with 2:16 left in the half.

A defensive first half ended with a flurry of points. The Patriots marched 80 yards in eight plays to retake the lead. The big play on the drive was an offisides on Avril on third-and-3 that gave the Patriots a first down. Brady connected with tight end Rob Gronkowski for a 22-yard touchdown with 31 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Patriots a 14-7 lead. Inexplicably, the Seahawks had linebacker K.J. Wright covering Gronkowski alone.

The Seahawks got the ball back with 31 seconds and all their timeouts at their own 20. Running back Robert Turbin broke a 19-yard run on the first play and that set the tone. They moved to the Patriots' 11 in four plays. There they faced a tough decision with six seconds left to either run a play or just kick the field goal. Seattle coach Pete Carroll went for it and it paid off with Wilson connecting with Matthews again, this time for the 11-yard touchdown that tied the game at 14-14. It was just the third time a Super Bowl had been tied at halftime.
