Marvel Comics swallows the entertainment business with its ever- expanding franchise of movies starring its characters, we'll always remember Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) as one of the smartest of the bunch.
In "Agent Carter," she's also a WWII bombshell, with the kind of dry British humor that we haven't heard since the heyday of Diana Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel on "The Avengers."
Stuck with the boring business of tying up a suspect, Agent Carter remarks, "Whatever happened to a nice cup of tea and a civilized interrogation?"
Mourning the loss of her beloved Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) — who disappeared while disposing of nuclear weapons — Peggy takes a clerical job with the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve). The year is 1946 and Peggy, outfitted in period sweaters and skirts, takes on a covert assignment from her old buddy, inventor Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, who appeared in "Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger.")
He wants her to track down the people who have stolen the nuclear weapons he designed before they can be sold and used for destructive means.
In pitting Peggy against an all-male world of colleagues (Shea Wigham of "Boardwalk Empire" plays her boss, Chief Roger Dooley) and villains (TV baddie James Frain plays Leet Brannis), the producers give Atwell plenty of opportunities to establish herself as a serious TV star, even in this limited, eight-week format.
She packs a mean punch, can fire a pistol without blinking and steps into a disguise with the same ease as Jennifer Garner used to do on "Alias."
The cast may have one-too-many men with brilliantine in their hair, but as long as we see Atwell in scenes with her sidekick, the uptight Mr. Jarvis (James D'Arcy) — Stark's butler who also serves as guardian angel to the secret agent — the show will keep humming along nicely.
"Agent Carter" also has its period details down, from the Daisy Clover milk to the permanent sets (the Automat where Peggy eats).
More entertaining than its network stablemate "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., " "Agent Carter" is a lighter, welcome addition to the ranks of TV's kick-ass women, from Kalinda Sharma on "The Good Wife" to Carrie Mathison on "Homeland."
