Thousands of people are expected to descend upon Rockefeller Center in the coming weeks for a peek at its mammoth 85-foot-tall Norway spruce. But there's another mighty tree in the Big Apple that offers just as much holiday fun — without the unbearable crowds.
You'll find it in downtown Manhattan at the South Street Seaport, which kicked off the holiday season Tuesday night with the lighting of its own 55-foot Christmas tree. And the Seaport has much more to offer than a beautiful view of evergreens.
Its ice rink will host an array of activities in the coming weeks to get New Yorkers in the holiday spirit. First, learn to play like our neighbors to the north with curling lessons every Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. Suitable for individuals, couples or groups, the classes teach participants how to throw a stone, sweep and skip like the best of those Canadians ($50 per person).

Not the sporty type? Make your way to the rink on a Saturday, when you can skate your way back to the 1920s and '30s at Dandy Wellington's weekly Vintage Skate sessions. Not only will Wellington's live band play at the rink, but ice skaters and dancers will hit the ice in full vintage attire from 5 to 8 p.m.
And the rink has an option for those looking for a silent night, too: Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m., the seaport will provide wireless noise-canceling headsets. You can also use them to tune into a live DJ for your private skating serenade.
