Resurgent Carmelo helps Knicks finally snap 10-game skid

BOSTON — Carmelo Anthony returned unexpectedly and so did the Knicks from the land of losing.

Their 10-game losing streak ended with a 101-95 victory over Boston on Friday — but because it's the Knicks, it wasn't all good news.

Guard Iman Shumpert could be lost for a few weeks with a dislocated left shoulder he suffered in the second quarter. The Knicks already are without J.R. Smith, who has a bruised left knee and was scheduled to have an MRI exam.

Sparked by 22 points from Anthony, 20 from Amar'e Stoudemire and 12 from Jason Smith in the second half, the Knicks held off Boston's late charge to post their first victory in nearly three weeks, since their 91-83 win over the 76ers on Nov. 22.

The Knicks, in shooting 49.4 percent, moved to 5-20 after 25 games — still the worst start in team history.

Anthony shot 9 of 20 with five rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes, looking fresh after taking off the game in San Antonio on Wednesday to rest his left knee. At the morning shootarond, coach Derek Fisher said it was "doubtful'' Anthony would play and Anthony was still hinting at taking "one-to-two weeks off.''

Slumping point guard Jose Calderon had a rare solid outing, scoring nine points and adding seven assists in running the triangle offense. Tim Hardaway Jr. pumped in 16 points.

The Celtics rallied from a 86-73 deficit with 3:40 left to cut the Knicks' lead to 98-92, with 56 seconds left. Anthony sank two key free throws to push the lead back to eight after being fouled on an inbounds pass with 2 seconds on the shot clock.

In the second quarter, Shumpert and Boston's Jeff Green got entangled, with Green elbowing the Knicks guard as he tumbled to the court. Shumpert was taken off for evaluation and diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder.

It's unclear how long Shumpert could miss, but it could be close to a month. He is expected to have tests Saturday and the timetable depends on any internal damage with ligaments in his shoulder.

The Knicks played with more spirit in the first half than they had in their games in New Orleans and San Antonio combined in taking a 51-46 lead.

Hardaway ended the first half with a last-second 3-pointer that came off a Knicks offensive rebound.

Anthony looked crisp and scored 10 first-half points. The Knicks shot 55 percent from the field.

The Knicks led 26-19 after one quarter. They made six of their first seven shots and were 11-for-19 in the quarter. Anthony looked fresh and poised, going 4-for-6, hitting four mid-range jumpers in the first half.

Hardaway had an electric second quarter and finished with 12 at the break. He and Shane Larkin hooked up for one sizzling fastbreak, eschewing the triangle.

Smith hit four mid-ranger jumpers in the third quarter and the Knicks headed into the fourth leading 75-69. Anthony popped in a jumper to give the Knicks their biggest lead, 90-75 with 5:30 left, and they carried it home for the win.
