In front of LeBron, Knicks collapse for 8th straight loss

Apparently LeBron James' basketball IQ isn't as high as advertised. On his night off in New York City, awaiting Monday's bout in Brooklyn, James decided to show up to a Knicks game, sitting in celebrity row.

James should know better than voluntarily choosing to watch a losing basketball team. The Knicks again folded in the clutch and James watched LaMarcus Aldridge's Blazers take command of the game in the final two minutes and capture a 103-99 decision to send the Knicks to their eighth straight defeat and fall to 4-18 — their worst start in history.

It looked again like the Knicks might steal it with a late flurry — only to pull their last-minute fold.

James, wearing an orange hat, stayed to the final seconds but was never shown on the video scoreboard. James, who can opt out of his two-year contract this summer, watched the Knicks fall to 2-9 in games decided by five points or less.

Trailing 95-88, the Knicks surged on a 16-4 run, including nine straight points. Carmelo Anthony hit two straight jumpers, Amar'e Stoudemire hit a jumper and Anthony drove for a dunk after his original miss was rebounded by Jason Smith.

The Knicks led 97-95 with 3:32 left but then shot 1-of-6 to finish out. Yes, it was all too good to be true.
Anthony got cold again and even passed up a late shot for Pablo Prigioni, who missed a left-wing 3-pointer with 29 seconds left and the Knicks down three.

The Blazers iced it after Aldridge missed inside but Robin Lopez grabbed the offensive rebound and fired it back to the perimeter with six seconds left. The Blazers whipped the ball around and the Knicks didn't foul until there were 1.7 seconds left. Wesley Matthews sealed it with one of two free throws.

Anthony finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Stoudemire added 16 points and 10 rebounds and J.R. Smith was on fire, with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Aldridge's big finish left him with 24 points. He is a free agent in 2015 and made his lone appearance this season at the Garden.

Knicks coach Derek Fisher said before the game it's easy for the media to "kick us when we're down'' but plans on having 'the last laugh.'' However, he now guides the league's laughingstock.

Matthews scored nine straight points early in the fourth quarter to open it up. Matthews got hit in the face by Stoudemire a clear second after launching a 3-point miss. It appeared incidental contact, but the play was whistled a three-shot foul.

Matthews made all three. Then he bagged two straight 3-pointers to put the Blazers up 11 points with 7:40 left.

Aldridge caught fire late. He got fouled on a drive and hit two free throws with 2:47 left to put the Blazers back up 98-97. Aldridge made another nice low-post move on Jason Smith for a 100-97 lead, then hit a tough jumper over Stoudemire.

The Blazers secured eight offensive rebounds in the half to come away with a 53-50 lead at halftime and finished with 16 for the game, with Lopez's the dagger. The Knicks entered the night last in the league defensive rebounding percentage.
