Even with Sting at the helm, ‘The Last Ship’ still isn’t smooth sailing

When "The Last Ship" opened on Broadway a few months ago, many people were confused: Wait a minute — where's Sting?

Though he wrote the score, Sting hasn't been onstage singing it — until now. But while the box office has picked up since the rock star's replaced Jimmy Nail as Jackie White, a former shipyard foreman in a gritty English town devastated by unemployment, he doesn't add very much to the show.

Sting's comfortable enough onstage. After all, he knows the material inside out, and he's had a bit of experience playing to crowds. But he lacks Nail's imposing physicality and natural charisma.

The dark, rangy Nail came across as a leader of men. Sting, looking dapper in tweed and a scruffy beard, suggests more a gentleman scholar than a guy with grease under his fingernails and a seat with his butt imprint at the pub.

But the story of a gang of proud workers' last hurrah after losing their yards jobs makes up only part of the show.

The other part — more developed and more compelling — is a love triangle involving returning prodigal son Gideon (Michael Esper), his former flame, Meg (Rachel Tucker), and Meg's current boyfriend, Arthur (Aaron Lazar).

Those three get wonderful ballads like "When We Dance" and "It's Not the Same Moon" that the actors throw themselves into with earnest commitment — too bad they hardly ever interact with Sting, as they could have given him some pointers.

There are no baddies here and you root for the characters equally. You can see how Meg, given a sense of fiery independence by West End vet Tucker, could be torn between rebellious Gideon and responsible Arthur.
