Knicks’ shiny new defense gives up 120 points to Bucks

The most alarming news of Monday night figured to be Jose Calderon's calf injury that forced him out for good, limping to the locker room, after just four minutes.

But that paled in comparison to the Knicks' weak defensive showing in losing to the lowly Bucks, 120-107, in a Garden preseason game that stung more than most.

Knicks coach Derek Fisher said afterward he expects Calderon to play Wednesday against Washington, and he may have returned if it were a regular-season game. However, Fisher had little answer for the defensive woes as the Bucks shot 59.7 percent and eight Milwaukee players hit double-figures, led by O.J. Mayo's 24-points-in-30-minute explosion off the bench.

"Not taking nothing away from that team, but we shouldn't be giving up 120 points to them,'' Carmelo Anthony said.

Anthony scored 24 points but missed eight of his last nine shots in a clunky fourth quarter, picking up where he left off last season. The defense stunk after having a decent preseason in allowing just 86 points per game.

Anthony praised opposing coach, and former teammate, Jason Kidd's work.

"J-Kidd felt how the game was going and went small ball,'' Anthony said. "It's something we haven't even worked on."

Fisher started Amar'e Stoudemire at center over Sam Dalembert, who logged just 7:31 of action, his defense missed.

"It was a tough night from a matchup standpoint,'' Fisher said. "We don't spend a ton of time on matchups against each team. Tonight our small lineup didn't find ways to protect the paint.''

J.R. Smith said some bad shots "messed with the team morale" and caused the team to be slow getting back on defense.

Iman Shumpert had a rare rough night defensively. "We let them dictate the pace of the game,'' he said.

Anthony said he feels the Knicks will be better once Fisher figures out a consistent lineup.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, "The Greek Freak" of the Bucks, had a splendid rookie season and sees no reason why his older brother, Thanasis, can't approach that level when he becomes a Knicks rookie. Knicks president Phil Jackson drafted Thanasis Antetokounmpo in the second round, No. 52 overall, as a project player to stash in Europe. However, Thanasis made the surprise choice of rejecting two $500,000 European offers in order to play in the D-League with the Knicks' new affiliate in Westchester for about $30,000.

The 6-foot-7 defense-first guard is not on the Knicks' 15-man roster. The 22-year-old went unsigned and didn't attend Knicks training camp. But he was at the Garden to watch his brother.

"He can be better than me — I believe that,'' Giannis said after the Bucks' morning shootaround. "If he works harder than me. A lot of talents that play in the NBA, 18, 19, 20 [year-olds] — big names — they don't work hard, they didn't make it. Whoever works harder will be the best.''

"I think he's very athletic. You can't [teach] that. Like some guys are tall. You can't [teach] tallness. The only thing you can do is improve your skills to play in this league. That's what he's doing. Just trying to improve his skills so he can make it in the league.''

The Westchester Knicks don't start training camp until Nov. 4. Fisher said he hasn't seen Thanasis play recently as he works out with D-League coaches. It is against NBA rules for Thanasis to practice with the Knicks, but his agent said Thanasis' desire to be around the wanted the big club an have access to the Tarrytown facilities factored into his decision to pass on offers to play in Italy and Spain.

"Basketball is still kind of new to him as far as how to play, but he has a great ceiling,'' Fisher said. "We drafted him not because of what he can be in comparison to his brother but because of who he is."
