‘I think we can': Defiant Giants believe they’ll win-out

It's time for a break. But that doesn't mean the Giants are broken.

Sure, they failed back-to-back tests within the NFC East and now get a respite knowing they are closer to last place than first place. But all is not lost and their most productive defensive player is thinking big, even if his team most recently has come up small.

"I think the bye is good,'' Jason Pierre-Paul said Monday. "Get away from it, regroup and we have nine more games to play. Let's win all nine games. I think we can do it. We just have to believe."

The Giants did not make believers out of anyone after a 31-21 loss to the Cowboys, coming on the heels of a 27-0 embarrassment in Philadelphia. It sure looks as if there are haves and have-nots in the division and that the Giants are not where they want to be.

"We really have to find our identity, the 2014 Giants,'' left tackle Will Beatty said. "By no means is the book finished or written. It's a long season. You had three good ones and you showed you can do it, now we have to be consistent. We're not showing our full potential.''

Is that so? Maybe the Giants have already revealed themselves and they are showing their full potential. After all, they have been a team for years hovering on one side or another of .500 and perhaps this is what they are, a 3-4 team destined to finish somewhere slightly north or south of break-even, clearly a notch below the true contenders.

That's where they sit as they head into their bye week, a full three games behind the first-place Cowboys (6-1) and nearly as far behind the second-place Eagles (5-1). Riding a three-game winning streak, the Giants were eager to see where they stacked up with the division heavyweights and in consecutive weeks they were knocked out.

"There's a lot more football to be played." Pierre-Paul said. "Don't give up on us yet. Don't count us out yet."

Now it is six days off — the Giants were in for meetings Monday and do not have to report back to the team facility until next Monday — to chill out and then figure out what they are all about, with games looming against the Colts, at Seattle, against the 49ers and Cowboys in a four-game gauntlet that could break them.

"It will be tough,'' said defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, who was forced out against the Cowboys with a strained calf, an injury he expects will keep him out a few weeks. "Obviously you want to go into your bye week on a good note, with some momentum. It's always tough to go in like this, with back-to-back losses to the division teams, especially two teams on top of your division. We had a chance to be right up there on top with 'em, now we have a hole we have to climb back out of. We got to dig deep and do some soul-searching.''

Added into the soul-searching is the need for some body healing. Coming out of the bye, the hope is running back Rashad Jennings (out the past two games with a knee injury) and guard Geoff Schwartz (on short-term injured reserve with a dislocated toe) will be able to practice and play in the next game, Nov. 1 against the high-octane Colts. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and linebacker Jon Beason staggered to the break and need to rest their various maladies.

"It's not going to be easy," Eli Manning said. "It's going to be tough. But that's what we want. We want it to be tough. We want it to be possible."

There's nothing to cure with Manning, who has picked up the new West Coast offense and is playing as well as he ever has in the regular season. But he cannot compensate for glaring inconsistency on the offensive line. After five preseason games and seven in the regular season it has been a grind, but before parting ways, Manning, ever the captain, made sure to issue a suggestion that sounded more like a warning.

"We've played a lot of football, been at it a long time.'' Manning said. "I think it's good to get away from it but I just told them, 'Make sure you get away, still get some workouts, still be moving and make sure, when you come back, we know what's ahead of us.We know what the challenge is ahead of us, and get ready to make a big run and to get where we're playing our best football.'''
