Yankees eliminated from East, wild-card hopes all but over

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Confining Derek Jeter's frigid bat to the third-base dugout wasn't the answer for the lowest-scoring team in the AL Monday night.

Playing without their slumping captain the Yankees continued to swing bats softer than a wet newspaper.

And for the fifth straight game, the Yankees failed to score three runs on the way to a 1-0 defeat to the Rays that was witnessed by an announced crowd of 16,058.

The loss dropped the Yankees 5 ½ lengths out of the second AL wild-card spot and eliminated them from winning the AL East, although that was settled a long time ago.

When Logan Forsythe singled off Shawn Kelley with one out in the ninth, it was the first Rays' base runner since the fifth inning.

James Loney followed with a bloop single to center and David DeJesus hit for Sean Rodriguez. He whiffed on a 95 mph fastball. Matt Joyce, who like DeJesus hits left-handed, batted for Curt Casali and walked to load the bases for switch-hitting Ben Zobrist.

Zobrist lined a 1-1 pitch to right-center for the game-winner.

It was not a surprise the Yankees and Rays would bleed for runs since the Yankees were last in the AL with 577 runs scored and the Rays were one better going into the game.

The most exciting moment before the Rays won it in the ninth surfaced in the seventh when plate umpire Marty Foster called a first-pitch strike on Chase Headley. The third baseman stepped out of the box and voiced his displeasure about the pitch that appeared to be low. When Headley got back in the box, Foster ejected him. Headley, with Joe Girardi standing by, let the umpire have a barrage of noise.

With the crowd chanting "Derek Jeter, Derek Jeter'' Girardi sent Stephen Drew to complete Headley's at-bat and he popped out.

Ichiro Suzuki followed with a double to right and John Ryan Murphy walked. That was it for Alex Colome, who was replaced by Steve Geltz.

Brian McCann hit for Brendan Ryan, but a lazy fly to short center kept it scoreless.

Starters Chris Capuano and Colome kept the weak offenses at bay. Capuano gave up two hits and four walks in six innings and Colome, who spent most of the season in the minors, walked one and gave up six hits in 6 ²/₃ innings.

Adam Warren pitched two perfect innings before Kelley lost it. For the Rays, Geltz, Jeff Beliveau, Kirby Yates and Joel Peralta finished the shutout, allowing only a walk in 2 ¹/₃ innings.

One night after scoring twice in a 3-2 loss to the Orioles in Baltimore and arriving at the team hotel at 3:30 a.m., the Yankees looked like they never got the wake-up call.

Even when Mark Teixeira and Carlos Beltran opened the second with singles and moved to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch with one out, the Yankees failed to score.

After Headley looked at a third strike, Suzuki popped to short left field and Murphy lifted a stress-free fly to right for the final out and stranded the runners.

Martin Prado opened the fourth with an infield single, but never moved off first when Colome caught Teixeira looking, got Beltran on a fly to center and Headley on a grounder to first.

Thanks to miscommunication between Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner in left-center in the fourth inning, James Loney reached second when a fly ball glanced off Gardner's body with two outs and Ellsbury very close to Gardner. Capuano responded by catching Sean Rodriguez looking.

Casali, the No. 9 batter, opened the fifth with a walk and when Brandon Guyer singled the Rays had two on and one out. Capuano stranded them by retiring Evan Longoria on a fly to Gardner and got Myers to line out to Gardner.
