Jets ‘cornering’ the market on mediocrity

The Jets addressed their depleted cornerback position Sunday, although it could hardly be considered an upgrade.

Gang Green claimed former Browns corner Leon McFadden off waivers, making room for him on the 53-man roster by cutting fellow corner LeQuan Lewis.

McFadden was a third-round pick by Cleveland in 2013 who played in every game as a rookie, but couldn't survive the coaching transition to former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and was released Saturday.

The Jets' other significant move Sunday was keeping quarterback Matt Simms and adding former Rams running back Daryl Richardson — both via the practice squad.

The Jets had been anxious Simms might be claimed by another team after being cut Saturday, but he ended up clearing waivers. Richardson, meanwhile, was St. Louis' starting running back on opening day last season before being released this month.

As for McFadden, his acquisition looked more like an act of desperation in the wake of all the Jets' turmoil at corner.

The Jets had projected Dee Milliner and journeyman veteran Dimitri Patterson to be their Week 1 starters against the Raiders, but Milliner appears unlikely to play because of a high ankle sprain and Patterson was released Saturday after being suspended for a bizarre AWOL incident the week before.

The Jets also lost third-round pick Dexter McDougle, a talented young corner who was expected to get significant playing time as a rookie until he suffered a season-ending knee in training camp.

So unless the Jets make another significant move, their starting corners against Oakland are likely to be career backup Darrin Walls and converted safety Antonio Allen, with first-round disappointment Kyle Wilson playing the nickel position.

That's assuming Allen is cleared, after he suffered a concussion in a Week 3 preseason loss to the Giants.

As a result, McFadden could end up getting plenty of playing time early in the regular season. That can't be much of a comfort after he managed just one pass breakup and no interceptions in 223 defensive snaps last season.

McFadden got two starts in the preseason this year and was no better, getting called for a 37-yard pass interference penalty and allowing a 32-yard completion in the exhibition finale last week against the Bears.

Other announced additions to the Jets' practice squad included defensive tackle Tevita Finau, defensive lineman Kerry Hyder, safety Rontez Miles, tight end Chris Pantale and offensive tackle Brent Qvale. That means the Jets still have three vacancies after the NFL recently expanded the practice squad to 10 spots.
