Brian’s bat leads Yankees’ rally to defeat Rays

Down by four runs before the first inning was over, the Yankees' chances of winning Wednesday were about as good as their chances of reaching the postseason.

But seemingly out of nowhere, the Yankees rallied and Mark Teixeira's triple in the fifth scored Brian McCann to give them their first lead of the game and they pulled away for a 8-5 victory over Tampa Bay.

Now, all they need is about 15 more of them, as they entered the game trailing Detroit by 5 ½ games for the second AL wild-card spot.

"It's happened before," manager Joe Girardi said prior to the game, talking about his team's prospects despite their place in the standings. "It's very difficult, but it's happened before. You can only control things you can control, so go control them and then you worry about where you fall."

Even this win looked virtually unattainable when Chris Capuano imploded in the top of the first, giving up four runs in just one-third of an inning.

And with no Brett Gardner, Martin Prado or Carlos Beltran — as well as almost no hope of getting to the playoffs — it looked like a night when the small Yankee Stadium crowd wouldn't have much more to show for their trip to The Bronx than seeing Derek Jeter as the designated hitter.

That was until McCann continued his recent offensive resurgence and the bullpen provided 8 ¹/₃ innings of scoreless relief before Evan Longoria homered in the ninth.

McCann sparked the Yankees' comeback with a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the first inning on an 0-2 count off Jake Odorizzi.

The catcher came through again in the third, knocking in Chris Young and Jacoby Ellsbury with a two-out single to get the Yankees within 4-3.

Young tied the game an inning later off Odorizzi with his first homer as a Yankee.

The Yankees went ahead in the fifth.

After Jeter led off the inning by drilling a ball to the track in left-center, McCann was hit by a pitch.

The struggling Teixeira came up and hit a ball hard into the right-field corner where Wil Myers misplayed it off the wall and then was unable to pick up the ball.

While Myers wasn't charged with an error, his adventures in right allowed McCann to make it around the bases and Teixeira to reach third.

And the Yankees' bullpen, which was severely tested thanks to Capuano's early exit, was up to the task.

Chase Whitley came in to relieve Capuano in the first and tossed 2 ²/₃ scoreless innings before Preston Claiborne entered to start the fourth.

Claiborne hadn't appeared in a major league game since June 3, but managed to keep the Rays scoreless for a pair of innings before giving way to Adam Warren, who went 1 ²/₃ innings without giving up a run.

Dellin Betances and Esmil Rogers finished it up.

It all helped Capuano escape without a loss and the Yankees avoid a third straight defeat.

The lefty's outing began poorly when Teixeira misjudged Ben Zobrist's foul pop to start the game and Zobrist followed with a single to center. After striking out Brandon Guyer, Capuano walked Evan Longoria and then surrendered a run-scoring double to Myers.

James Loney then walked to load the bases before Yunel Escobar and Logan Forsythe had back-to-back RBI singles to end Capuano's short night.

Whitley came on and allowed a sacrifice fly to Ryan Hanigan to make it 4-0 before Sean Rodriguez whiffed to end the inning.

Still, the Yankees have a long way to go, something Girardi said the players are aware of.

"They know," Girardi said. "Believe me."
