The Devils have at least two future Hall of Famers on their roster in Martin Brodeur and Jaromir Jagr, but on Wednesday night, it was the future of the team that led them to a 5-2 victory over the Senators at the Prudential Center in Newark.
Reid Boucher, 20, a highly touted prospect the Devils drafted in 2011, scored his first NHL goal. He broke an OHL record with 62 goals for the Sarnia Sting last season and had 10 goals for Albany of the AHL this season before the Devils called him up Dec. 4. It took Boucher seven games before he netted his first.
Boucher was the beneficiary of a friendly bounce off the boards, as Eric Gelinas' slap shot from the slot went wide and caromed right to Boucher, who pounded it past Robin Lehner and into the net midway through the first period to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.
Gelinas, also a rookie, had a third-period goal and an assist and was a plus-3. The 22-year old defenseman has 15 points in 26 games.
The Devils got on the board just 2:02 into the game while shorthanded. With Marek Zidlicky in the box for hooking, a Senators turnover created a two-on-one for the Devils. Adam Henrique neatly slid the puck across the ice to Stephen Gionta, who beat Lehner for his first of the season. Gionta returned to the lineup after missing 11 games with an ankle injury.
Of course, the old guys did their parts, too. Jagr, 41, netted his team-leading 12th of the season and first on the power play early in the second period. It was his 693rd career goal, moving him into eighth place all time. He trails Mark Messier by one goal for seventh. Martin Brodeur, also 41, had 22 saves.
Damien Brunner also scored for the Devils and Colin Greening and Milan Michalek had power-play goals for the Senators.
