Nets take step backward in loss to Wizards

The Nets still have plenty of work to do.

Just when it seemed as if they had finally gotten themselves on track, winning four of their last five games, the Nets came out flat Wednesday night, falling behind early and never recovering as they lost 113-107 to the Wizards at Barclays Center.

After playing much better defense in recent games, the Nets (9-16), allowed the Wizards to have a field day from deep, as Washington shot 12-for-20 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the Wizards also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Nets 51-31, including a ridiculous 19-5 edge in offensive boards.

All of that added up to the Nets failing to build on their recent momentum, remaining two games behind the Celtics in the Atlantic Division and, amazingly, continuing to remain outside of the playoffs in the horrible Eastern Conference.

The Nets wasted a tremendous performance off the bench from Paul Pierce, who finished with a team-high 27 points on 10-for-12 shooting, including hitting his first seven shots. Pierce's hot shooting helped the Nets finish the game shooting 52.7 percent from the floor, which still wasn't enough to get a win thanks to the combination of poor rebounding and atrocious 3-point defense.

After a basket from Brook Lopez, who scored 22 points after missing the previous two games with a sprained left ankle, tied the score at 12 early in the first quarter, Washington immediately responded with a 13-2 run that gave the Wizards (11-13) a lead they would hold for nearly the rest of the game.

Other than when the Nets made a run in the second quarter and took a brief 40-39 lead on a Pierce 3-pointer, they spent most of the game alternating runs with the Wizards. Every time the Nets would close to within four or five points, Washington would push the lead back to around 10.

The Nets finally managed to close to within 101-100 with two minutes left on a fadeaway jumper from Deron Williams, who finished with 15 points and 13 assists while playing the entire second half. But, once again, the Wizards responded, getting a putback layup from Marcin Gortat off a John Wall missed jumper, and after Williams missed a jumper at the other end, Bradley Beal's 3-pointer from the wing gave Washington a 106-100 lead with 1:08 left that sealed the win.

Wall scored 21 points to lead seven players in double-figures for the Wizards, including Nene, who scored 17 points off the bench after missing the previous four games with Achilles soreness.
