Knicks rally falls short to Rose, Bulls

CHICAGO — The Knicks were dressed in their new all-orange alternate uniforms, but they became the pumpkins at United Center in the final seconds Thursday night, as Derrick Rose earned the sweetest Halloween treat in the Bulls' home-opener, his first game in Chicago in 19 months.

Rose hit the game-winner on tough 12-foot pull-up over the outstretched arms of Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton with 5.6 seconds left to give the Bulls a thrilling 82-81 win.

"That shot he made was a great shot," Carmelo Anthony said of Rose's heroics. "It was a prayer, but he made it."

Anthony played the goat, as he couldn't raise his game in the final two minutes. With a chance to win it, he bricked an 18-footer from the left side and Chandler missed the tip attempt at the buzzer. The Knicks fell to 1-1, though they gave a noble effort in rallying from 10 points down to nearly steal it in the final minute.

"I got the look I wanted," Anthony said. "It just didn't fall."

Anthony finished 8-of-24 for 22 points — 2-for-7 in the final period. Tied at 80, Anthony missed a forced 19-footer with the shot clock running down, but the Knicks got a break when the Bulls were called for a loose-ball foul on Joakim Noah with 10.8 seconds left. Chandler missed the first three throw, but made the second one to put the Knicks up 81-80 — a lead that allowed Rose the crack he needed to win it.

To start the ill-fated comeback, unfazed rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a 3, Anthony bagged a 15-footer and Felton drained a 3-pointer and the Knicks were within 76-74 with 5:26 to go.

Rose lost the ball out of bounds and the Knicks tied it when Iman Shumpert missed a side jumper, got his own rebound and dunked, making it 76-76 with 4:45 left.

Capping a 12-0 run, Anthony scored on a turnaround and the Knicks led for the first time since early in the first quarter, 78-76, with 4:12 left.

At 78-78, Chandler hauled in two offensive rebounds to keep alive a possession with 2:30 left. But he got called for an offensive foul while battling for a rebound with Noah. The Knicks were in the penalty and Noah dropped in both free throws to put the Bulls up, 80-78. Just to get that close was commendable after the start the Knicks got off to.

Hurt by a poor stint from a rusty Amar'e Stoudemire in his season debut, the Knicks played a poor first quarter and fell behind 26-16 before rallying to get within five, 43-38, at halftime.

Stoudemire checked in with 4:06 left in first quarter and the Knicks, down just three, stumbled. He bounced the ball off of his foot and out of bounds on his first foray, then committed an offensive foul setting a pick. He was worse defending burly Carlos Boozer, who scored three times over Stoudemire. Finally Taj Gibson skied at the buzzer for a putback and the Knicks trailed by 10 after one.

Until the final 10 seconds of the game, this wasn't even a good performance by Rose in his United Center return. Playing with a sore neck, Rose started 2-of-9. His two buckets came off fast breaks after Metta World Peace bricked two shots and the Bulls got going in transition.

Stoudemire came out with 10:04 left in the second quarter for Bargnani, who didn't excel either. In fact, he committed three offensive fouls in the period, leading to his departure. He was called for a moving screen with 7:32 left in the half and was gone.

After a tough Knicks debut at the Garden in which he got booed, Bargnani, who Mike Woodson started at power forward to match up with Noah and Boozer, was scoreless at halftime, missing both his shots, including a wide-open 3-pointer.

He made his first four shots of the third quarter, but the Knicks suffered defensive breakdowns, and a fast-break Rose bucket and a wide-open Luol Deng 3-pointer sent the Bulls ahead by 13 late in the third quarter. Anthony had led a brief rally before the Bulls pulled away.

The Bulls closed the third with a 3-point play from Kirk Hinrich , who hit an off-balance runner and got fouled by Pablo Prigioni. That gave the Bulls a 71-61 entering the fourth quarter — a lead that wouldn't last, but one that Rose would grab back just in time.
