MOVIE REVIEW
RISING FROM ASHES
In English, French and Kinyarwanda, with English subtitles. Running time: 80 minutes. Not rated (some violent images). At the Quad, 13th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
Narrated and produced by Forest Whitaker, this documentary tells the sort of story familiar from countless human-interest stories at the Olympics: athletes from a poor, strife-torn country and their spirit-lifting achievements.
The sincerity and simplicity of the film, however, lift it somewhat above the ordinary run. At the opening, we're told that during Rwanda's appalling genocide in 1994, possessing a bike was one of the only ways to escape the slaughter. Rwandans love cycling, and their beautiful mountainous country, with its miles of dirt roads, offers good conditions for training.
Intrigued by Rwandans who rode any broken-down bike they could find, American cyclist Jock Boyer joined colleague Tom Ritchey in Rwanda to establish a team. With limited funds, the group has managed to establish a foothold in African cycling, and at least one member, Adrien Niyonshuti, did in fact qualify for the Olympics.
The gentleness of the approach, and director T.C. Johnstone's obvious affection for his subjects, mean that deeper questions and issues are only lightly addressed. (Boyer's career, for example, imploded when he served time for lewd behavior with a minor, a fact the film mentions, then hastily drops.) But it takes a stony heart indeed to resist the Rwandan cyclists and the joy they have found in their sport.
