Robbins in her nest

Missy Robbins' West Village apartment is for the birds.

Or, at least, it was for one specific pigeon, who somehow managed to find its way inside her roughly 600-square-foot rental about two years ago.

Robbins, the chef at A Voce, one of the premier Italian restaurants in the city with locations on lower Madison Avenue and at the Time Warner Center, went out one morning and came back to her uncluttered home and found said pigeon fluttering around her bedroom.

"I still don't know how it came in," Robbins says.

Perhaps the bird had flown in through the woodburning fireplace. Or through one of the old-fashioned windows that captured Robbins' attention when she first looked at the apartment. But regardless of how it got there, Robbins' reaction was unambiguous: "I ran out screaming and shut the door. I'm sorry — do you want a pigeon in your apartment? They're like rats. I was crying." But after a moment's pause, she adds: "And kind of laughing."

We imagine that the pigeon in question was attracted to many things about Robbins' cozy nest.

There is, for instance, her collection of cookbooks. "I have over 300 cookbooks," Robbins, 41, says. The hardcovers are lined up along the living room wall. (There are plans for more shelves.) Some are glossy best sellers; others are slightly older and out of print. "These are some of my favorites," Robbins says, pointing to "The Good Cook Techniques and Recipes" from Time-Life. "They were printed in the early '60s."

Hanging from the living room ceiling is a Nelson bubble lamp over a sofa from Jennifer Convertibles, a square, glass-topped coffee table and a white shag rug.

"When I first looked at [the apartment], the walls were yellow and there was this ugly brass chandelier," Robbins says. She switched out the chandelier for the bubble lamp and painted the walls white.

The effect is clean and modern, balanced by classic prewar touches, like the high ceilings and the fireplace. "Supposedly [the fireplace works]," Robbins says. "But I'm always afraid I'm going to burn the place down."

The room looks out on a pretty, tree-lined strip of the West Village through iron-paned windows. "The windows were why I took the apartment," Robbins says.

Robbins moved in just over four years ago, after finishing up a gig at Spiaggia in Chicago, and wanted something with a good location. (It's a moderate walk to the downtown A Voce, just off of Madison Square Park, and it's a convenient subway ride to the A Voce at the Time Warner Center.)

Her broker is a friend, Josh Wesoky with Sotheby's, who almost hadn't shown her the unit because of the modesty of the kitchen. "The kitchen obviously didn't sell me," Robbins admits. There is room for coffee mugs, bottles of booze, a mortar and pestle, and little else in the way of high-tech equipment. "But I already have two giant kitchens."
