Nets slip past Pistons

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Nets outplayed the Pistons for about 20 minutes last night. Luckily for them, that was enough.

Thanks to big runs to end each quarter, the Nets somehow found a way to slip past the Pistons, 93-90, inside The Palace of Auburn Hills.

It was a confusing game, as the Nets (29-20) couldn't get anything going for large stretches of play, particularly in the first half, and only managed to keep from getting blown out thanks to closing out quarters well – which happened to be the exact thing that cost them a win Tuesday in Brooklyn against the Lakers, when the Nets allowed Los Angeles to finish the game on a 10-0 run.

The Nets didn't exactly close like Secretariat against the Pistons (18-32), but they did what they had to do in order to escape with a win. After the Nets took an 86-83 lead with 3:51 remaining on a Deron Williams jumper, both teams went ice cold, failing to score for over two minutes until Pistons forward Jonas Jerebko tipped in his own miss with 1:28 remaining to cut the Nets' lead to 86-85.

The two teams exchanged points for the next minute, with Gerald Wallace hitting a pair of free throws, Jerebko hitting a jumper and Brook Lopez and Greg Monroe each hitting one of two free throws to leave the Nets with the ball up one, 89-88, with 32.5 seconds left.

But after Lopez then backed down Monroe and hit a layup over him with 17.8 seconds left, the Pistons came down and got a bucket from Monroe to get the lead back to one. Joe Johnson then hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to three, and Will Bynum's potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short to give the Nets the win.

Lopez finished with 17 points to lead the Nets, while Reggie Evans added 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Monroe had 23 points to lead the Pistons.

Outside of runs to end each quarter, the Nets were thoroughly outplayed in the first half. After shooting less than 35 percent in their loss to the Lakers on Tuesday, the Nets shooting woes continued in the first half, as they finished shooting 35.6 percent from the field, to go with nine turnovers that led to 13 Pistons points.

Everyone who took the floor was at least partially to blame, as the Nets had dreadfully slow starts in both the first quarter with the starters on the floor and the second with their reserves. In the first, the Pistons jumped out to a 19-9 lead with 3:17 remaining in the quarter after a Jason Maxiell jumper. The Nets then responded with a 14-5 run to end the quarter, including five points from Reggie Evans, to allow the Nets to end the quarter trailing 24-23.

But it was more of the same in the second, as a combination of inept offense from the Nets and some easy buckets for the Pistons allowed Detroit to open the quarter with a 22-10 run that was capped by a Will Bynum with 2:38 remaining, giving the Pistons a 46-33 lead.

Once again, though, the Nets managed to close the half with another run, this time scoring the final seven points of the quarter to end the half trailing 46-40 – a score that was very misleading, given how poorly the Nets had played.

The game of dueling runs continued in the third quarter, as the Nets used an 8-0 run to finally get back into the lead at 58-57 with a Gerald Wallace 3-pointer midway through the quarter. Once again, though, the Pistons responded, this time with a 13-5 run, to give the Pistons a 70-62 lead late in the quarter.

But, as the Nets had each of the first two quarters, they closed the third well, outscoring the Pistons 7-3 over the final xx:xx, including a Keith Bogans corner 3-pointer at the buzzer, to head to the fourth trailing 73-69.
