TLC tests new warning system to prevent cabbie accidents

New technology could keep taxis from crashing on the city streets, as part of Vision Zero.

The TLC is testing a warning system in six cabs that uses artificial vision technology like cameras and radar to warn drivers about an incoming collision, officials said.

It is part of a new year-long pilot program that will launch Tuesday to make hacks safer.

"There is some very promising technology out there that we hope can help us achieve the goals of Vision Zero," said TLC Commissioner Meera Joshi. "And the more we learn about it through this pilot, the more effective we will be when adding it to our tool belt."

The agency will also use black boxes in cabs to help the TLC study driver behavior and see how the agency can reduce traffic deaths and injuries.
