New York City ID cards don’t allow smiling in photos

Better wipe that smile off your face!

New Yorkers have been left frowning over their new municipal IDs — because they're not allowed to show off their pearly whites when they take a photo for the cards.

While smiles are allowed on the free, multipurpose ID cards, applicants are barred from showing teeth because that interferes with sensitive facial-recognition technology aimed at weeding out fraudulent applications.

"I'm not exactly sure why it matters. Teeth are a good identifier. In my driver's license, I can smile. Why can't I smile here?" wondered Summer Gripper, 37, who tried to flash a grin as she got her photo taken for the new card Monday at the Mid-Manhattan Library.

"She said, 'No teeth.' I said, 'No teeth?' She goes, 'No teeth,' " Gripper added, referring to the agent who processed her application.

"So then I couldn't get my face together and she snapped a bad photo. She laughed at it!"

A toothy smiling makes it tough for facial-recognition — or duplicate-image — software to be able to identify a person, according to experts.

"The reason is because of the restrictions of their software," Chengjun Liu, an associate professor of computer science at New Jersey Institute of Technology, told The Post.

Older versions of the software are unable to "match a poker face with a smiling face," he said.

The city uses its facial-recognition software only to scan the ID cards to help prevent identity theft, according to the city's Human Resources Administration.

A city official confirmed that teeth are barred because they interfere with the software.

Similarly, New Jersey outlawed its residents from showing their teeth in drivers'-license photos starting in 2012.

But the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, which uses more sophisticated software, allows its license applicants to flaunt smiles without restriction.

And for passports, "natural smiles" are permitted, although a "neutral facial expression" is preferred, according to the State Department's Web site.

South Korean student Yoon Ji, 26, wished she could have smiled in her municipal ID photo to appear more approachable.

"If someone sees my ID, and I [am smiling], I can give a good impression," she said.

"Without the smile, I look just serious. I look so sad. I'm not sad!"

More than 115,000 municipal ID card applications have been processed since the program rolled out in mid-January, according to the city.

Just two cases of fraud have been detected so far.
