This week’s couple: No laughing date

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 08 Maret 2015 | 10.46

Quirky behavior can have its charms, but also, its limits.

When Patrice, 32, went out with M.L., a 30-year-old who crochets for a living, she reached her threshold. She tried to overlook his kooky career choice, but when he started giggling, she'd had enough. Patrice shut down, leaving M.L. struggling to keep the conversation going.

In the end, the only thing either found really amusing about the date was the improv show they took in at the UCB Theatre East, read. on.

She said:

M.L. arrived late, but he was tall, which I really liked. With his slim build, crochet hat and skinny trousers, he was a bit different than the men I'm typically attracted to.

He described what he does for a living: crocheting hats, masks and even futuristic costumes and suits. Then he started talking about taking a coding class.

He generally seemed all over the place. When he was asked what he wanted to drink — the venue was limited to beer and wine — he told the woman to surprise him and then he let out a giggle.

Not a laugh, but a high-pitched giggle. If the crocheting, futuristic suits and sweaty palms hadn't turned me off, the giggle was the final quirk. That's when it became clear that we didn't really have much in common and all I could hope for was an entertaining show at UCB East.

Luckily, that's what I got. The Cipha Sounds' "Take it Personal" show was a nice buffer and perfect way for us to laugh and enjoy ourselves, even if we weren't necessarily enjoying each other's company.

I don't bash anyone for their hobbies — I like collecting vintage electronics and first edition books! — but M.L. is exactly what I thought a 30-year-old man who crochets would be like: a bit spacey. Five minutes after the show, we went our separate ways. I don't plan to call or see him in the future.

He said:

Going into this date, I was excited about meeting someone who could, at the very least, potentially be a friend. But it didn't take me long to realize this was likely not going to happen with Patrice.

I felt as if I was dominating the conversation. I was interested in her sharing more about her professional experiences in fashion, but she didn't.

She did appeal to my simple desires when she described her home settings — warm lighting, an interest in home gardening and wallpaper. Other than that, I got less conversation from her than i would hydration from an uprooted cactus.

Since we were short on conversation, Cipha Sounds' "Take it Personal" show was a nice filler. I appreciated the organized chaos and how animated the performance was.

We didn't hang out for long after the show. Maybe there's a chance we could have a platonic relationship, but, though I didn't get her number, I don't think we'll see one another again.
