City buses have some competition when it comes to moving riders at a snail's pace.
Subway trains saw a 45 percent increase in delays last year — and frustrated riders said on Thursday that lateness is so common that they have come to expect it every time they go underground.
"The 6 train is reliable in only one way — its unreliability," Eliezer DeCosta, 24, said while waiting at the Grand Central station.
"Seriously, I'd put money down every time I get on the 6 that I'm going to be late to wherever I'm going."
"It's practically a guarantee. And it's absolutely gotten worse in the years that I've been riding it."
Straphangers saw an average of 43,339 delays per month last year on weekdays, compared with 29,774 in 2013, according to a report from a recent MTA committee meeting.
Weekend delays shot up from an average of 6,917 in 2013 to 9,468 in 2014.
Overall on-time performance also took a dive, with trains arriving on schedule 74 percent of the time last year — an 8 percent slide from the year before.
The MTA considers a train delayed if it pulls into the last station on its line more than five minutes after it is scheduled to arrive.
Individually, the 6 line had the largest drop in dependability last year, falling 18.6 percent, arriving on-time just 54 percent of the time.
The 2, 4 and 5 lines also performed poorly.
One straphanger, Marina Goncalves, 41, said she dreads the entire green line.
"Luckily, I have the 4 and the 5 running on the same line, so I'll take those whenever possible. Not that they're much better, but at least with those I have a slightly better chance of getting to work on time," the human-resources worker said.
Delays have gone up as a record number of riders have been cramming into trains, with 6 million people squeezing into subway cars on 29 days in 2014.
The MTA said delays were also caused by work on Hurricane Sandy repairs and on other capital projects, as well as increased safety inspections.
"Unfortunately, this level of protection comes at a cost to service, not only on the tracks where workers are maintaining or inspecting equipment, but in many cases on adjacent tracks, as well," said MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz.
