One down, two to go.
Top-seeded St. Francis Brooklyn opened the Northeast Conference Tournament in Brooklyn Heights the favorite to reach the NCAA Tournament and snap its program-long drought.
But the Terriers quickly realized how difficult punching their ticket to the field of 68 will be, far tougher than it was to run through the NEC regular season at 15-3, with a resilient 79-70 victory over rival LIU Brooklyn in the quarterfinals Wednesday night at The Pope Center.
With the win, St. Francis snapped an eight-game losing streak in the postseason tournament — the Terriers' previous win came in 2003, when they reached the final. They will face St. Francis (Pa.), 73-58 winners over Mount St. Mary's, in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Brooklyn.
Just 3:09 after the opening tip, St. Francis (22-10) trailed 10-2. Following a furious 33-10 run, fueled by the team's star seniors Jalen Cannon and Brent Jones, that threatened to blow the ceiling off the tiny gymnasium, it seemed the Terriers had the game well under control, comfortably up 35-22 at the break.
The second half started just like the first, LIU keeping the ball out of Cannon's hands and trimming the 13-point halftime deficit to two, 44-42, on a Martin Hermannsson jumper with 10:21 left.
Cannon took over from there, igniting a 13-4 run, with five straight points. Coach Glenn Braica went to a trap, and the lead quickly expanded back to double-figures.
LIU didn't get closer than six the rest of the way. Jones, the Brooklyn point guard who seemed to make a big shot whenever LIU got close, led the Terriers with a career-high 31 points and five assists while Cannon, the NEC Player of the Year, added 15 points and 15 rebounds. Yunus Hopkinson added 11. Landon Atterbury led LIU (12-18) with 18 points.
