So much for the Nets turning a corner.
After showing encouraging signs through their first six games following the All-Star break, including Monday's thrilling last-second win over the Warriors, the Nets showed why it's still impossible to trust them over four months into this season with an embarrassing 115-91 loss to the Hornets at Barclays Center on Wednesday night.
The Nets (25-34) said all the right things about how critical this game was, given that the two teams entered tied for eighth place in the Eastern Conference and a win would have guaranteed the Nets the tiebreaker over Charlotte.
But they proceeded to go out and play as if it were a preseason game, falling behind by 23 points in the first quarter and never recovering — despite the fact the Hornets (26-33) had played and won against the Lakers in Charlotte, N.C., the night before while the Nets had been resting at home.
Charlotte guard Mo Williams, a recent acquisition to fill in for injured New York native Kemba Walker, said after Tuesday's win facing the Nets would be a playoff-like game, and big man Al Jefferson agreed. Coach Steve Clifford seemed to treat it like one, as well, switching up his starting lineup to go small and match up with the smaller unit that has allowed the Nets to get off to a strong start after the break.

But unlike the Nets, who had said similar things at Tuesday's practice, the Hornets came out and backed up their words. Williams had five points and nine assists in the first quarter, while Jefferson had 10 points and four rebounds on 5-for-6 shooting to help the Hornets jump out to a 29-6 lead seven minutes into the game. Charlotte made 13 of its first 15 shots, while Brooklyn missed 12 of its first 15 field goal attempts.
The Hornets predictably cooled off as the game progressed, but it didn't matter, as the Nets never were able to get anything going, outside of one brief 10-0 run that allowed them to pull back to almost within double-digits midway through the second quarter. The Hornets went into the halftime break with a 56-44 lead.
Just when it looked as if the Nets would have a chance to make things interesting, however, the Hornets blitzed them again to start the second half. Williams, Jefferson and Gerald Henderson combined on a 10-2 run to open the third quarter that pushed the lead back to 20, where it basically remained for the rest of the game.
The Nets never got their offense going, shooting 39.8 percent overall and 18.8 percent (3-for-16) from 3-point range, but the reasons for this loss went far beyond their failure to knock down open shots. Whenever there was a loose ball, the Hornets inevitably seemed to jump on it, and Charlotte wound up with a convincing 49-26 rebounding edge.
Jefferson led the Hornets with 19 points, and all five Charlotte starters finished in double-figures. Williams added 14 points and 14 assists, while Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Deron Williams had 12 points and six assists and Mason Plumlee had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead the Nets. Joe Johnson, Alan Anderson, Brook Lopez and Jarrett Jack combined to go 8-for-31.
