Netanyahu says he won’t allow a Palestinian state if re-elected

Speaking on the eve of Israel's closely watched election, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Monday that he wouldn't allow a Palestinian state as long as he's running the country.

It was a turnaround for the Israeli leader, whose Likud Party is trailing in the polls and who announced his qualified support for a two-state solution in 2009.

"I think that anyone who moves to establish a Palestinian state and evacuate territory gives territory away to radical Islamist attacks against Israel," Netanyahu said at the Har Homa settlement in East Jerusalem.

"The left has buried its head in the sand time after time and ignores this, but we are realistic and understand," he added, in an interview posted on the NRG News Web site.

When asked if that meant there would be no Palestinian state if he won at the polls, Netanyahu replied, "Indeed."

He also implied that recent settlement activity was meant in part to disrupt the map of a future Palestinian state — saying he backed settlement construction in Har Homa "exactly because it stops the continuation of the Palestinians."

In another politically charged comment, Netanyahu warned that center-left opposition party Zionist Union "would attach itself to the international community and do their bidding."

His comments were seen as an effort to fire up conservative supporters before polls opened.

Netanyahu warned that his defeat at the hands of a Zionist Union government — headed by prime-minister candidate Isaac Herzog and former peace negotiator Tzipi Livni — would lead to the creation of a "Hamas-stan" in Jerusalem.

Back in a 2009 speech at Bar Ilan University calling for peace, Netanyahu offered a different view of a Palestinian state.

"In my vision of peace, there are two free peoples living side by side in this small land, with good neighborly relations and mutual respect, each with its flag, anthem and government, with neither one threatening its neighbor's security and existence," he said at the time, adding that Palestine would have to be demilitarized and recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

The race is being closely scrutinized in the United States, both because of its implications for Israel and Middle East policy, and for the latest developments in an angry political clash with the White House.

The polls close at 10 p.m. Israeli time (4 p.m. EDT) Tuesday.

If one party doesn't win a majority in the 120-member Knesset, the leading party attempts to form a coalition government, which could put two centrist parties in control.
