No wonder Hollywood is so taken with China.
Its box office soared 34 percent in 2013, to $4.8 billion, while the US-Canada box fell 5 percent, to $10.4 billion, according to Motion Picture Association of America data released Wednesday.
If these trends continue, China may supplant US-Canada as the world's largest movie market in 2017.
The projection for China in 2017: $11.5 billion. For US-Canada, which the MPAA counts as a single market: $8.9 billion. The data show China is driving the global box office, which in 2014 increased a paltry 1 percent to total $36.4 billion.
"Content is being modified for that market," said analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak, which compiled the data for the MPAA.
Consider the success of "Transformers 4," which purposely played to Chinese sensibilities. The Paramount blockbuster wound up selling $320 million tickets in China — compared with $245 million in US-Canada.
