Nothing but the best for the Finest.
City officials said Friday they are dedicating $7.3 million for bulletproof vests that Police Commissioner Bratton hailed as the "Rolls-Royce" of all the models — and they're not waiting until next year to do it.
After months of tense relations between the police unions and City Hall, Mayor de Blasio and City Council Speaker Mark-Viverito committed to fast-tracking the purchase of 13,000 vests in the current fiscal year's budget.
In mid-January, the two proposed allocating the money for the fiscal 2016 budget, which starts in June.
But they said Friday they were spurred to commit the money immediately after police unions said cops couldn't wait.
"This was something that we really only heard very clearly the specifics of in the last weeks, but once we understood that that was a need, it was our obligation to do all we could to address it," de Blasio said at the 34th Precinct in northern Manhattan.
"Every man and woman who serves us in uniform has taken an oath; they live up to that oath every day. We have an obligation to them to make sure they get home safely at night."
The Post was the first to disclose that thousands of cops were wearing outdated vests with expired warranties and reduced stopping power.
Even Bratton said he was surprised by the fast action.
He said the fast timetable would allow the department to replace 6,400 vests that are over 10 years old as early as May. Another 15,500 vests are more than five years old.
"Literally within two weeks of this issue being raised by the unions, the mayor and the council responded very quickly," said Bratton.
"When, in this government, does anything happen that quickly? Not in my recollection."
Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association — who has been one of the most vocal critics of de Blasio for a perceived lack of support of police — said the move is a good first step at restoring trust.
Both Lynch and Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins have quieted their criticisms of the mayor in recent weeks.
"We hope this represents the first of many actions that demonstrate City Hall's true support for New York City police officers," said Lynch.
The top-of-the line "Alpha Elite" vests are 25 to 30 percent lighter than traditional vests, according to Bratton.
They will also come with a large ceramic plate in the center that is resistant to knife thrusts and the long-range bullets.
