Steve Kerr made it official. The Knicks can win their remaining 31 games and still not finish with a winning record.
The Knicks, playing without a resting Carmelo Anthony, made the Warriors coach sweat a bit, scoring 16 straight points to cut a 26-point deficit to five with 4:02 left, but that's where the comeback crashed. Stephen Curry and Golden State regained their composure and posted a 106-92 victory, closing the contest on an 11-2 run before a slew of Warriors fans at the Garden.
The Knicks fell to 10-41 and can't finish over .500. Instead, they are on pace for the worst record in franchise history, while Kerr's Warriors moved to 40-9.
Perhaps things would have been different had Kerr not backed out of a verbal agreement to coach the Knicks, but we'll never know. Curry finished with 22 points and Draymond Green, a 2015 free agent, had 20 points.
Langston Galloway led six Knicks double-figure scorers with 15 points but shot 5-of-19, going cold in the final minutes.
The Knicks' frenzied fourth-quarter run was aided by with Quincy Acy, who provided a spark, and the Warriors starting the quarter shooting 1-of-11. Acy scored on a putback dunk to make it 95-86 with 7:26 left. Shane Larkin's floater got them to 95-90.
After Anthony's sluggish performance in Brooklyn on Friday, he took the night off against the Warriors. He looked fatigued at the end of the loss to the Nets and told The Post he was fighting a bad cold.
The Knicks are trying not to have Anthony play on back-to-back nights to save him for a longer run into the season. Anthony won't suit up in uniform at the Garden again until All-Star Sunday, when he starts for the Eastern Conference.
In a pregame ceremony, Anthony was handed his All-Star jersey by Knicks greats Walt Frazier, John Starks and Allan Houston. The Knicks will enter the All-Star break after games in Miami and Orlando on Monday and Wednesday.
Golden State rolled to a 32-19 lead after one quarter, shot up by 24 in the second quarter and led 64-48 at intermission. Curry closed out the half in style, burying a 26-foot 3-pointer with 5 seconds left after being set free after a pick on Galloway.
The Warriors made 8 of 14 3-pointers in the half. All-purpose forward Green, the prized 2015 free agent, went 3-of-5 from 3-point range in the half, while 2016 free-agent and ex-Knick David Lee scored all 10 of his points in the first half after getting a big hand when he checked into the contest.
The highlight play came after Andre Iguodala intercepted a pass by Larkin at midcourt and drove down for a monstrous slam dunk that had the good chunk of Warriors fans roaring in delight.
The Knicks were frustrated in the second period after falling behind by 22. Galloway was called for a flagrant foul 1 as he smacked Klay Thompson across the head as he went up for a layup. Thompson's two free throws drove the lead to 54-30 with 4:54 left in the half.
In the third quarter, Curry wowed the crowd, faking out Larkin and then banking in a 3-pointer while still getting hacked by the point guard to draw a foul.
