"Saturday Night Live's" 40th anniversary special Sunday night drew over 23 million viewers.

The three-and-a-half-hour show — which featured clip packages, musical performances and classic characters — gave NBC its most-watched prime-time entertainment telecast (excluding post-Super Bowl programs) in more than a decade, since "ER" in May 2004.

In the "money" demo of adults 18-49, "SNL" scored the network's best ratings (7.8, equal to 10 million viewers) since the "Will & Grace" finale in 2006.

Notwithstanding the Super Bowl and major awards shows, that's the best adults 18-49 rating for an entertainment program (on broadcast TV) since a 2012 episode of "American Idol."

NBC's "Red Carpet Live" special also performed well, averaging more than 11 million viewers from 7-8 p.m., winning the time period.

"SNL" trended on Twitter during the broadcast, with the special drawing the highest number of impressions (188 million) of any series episode since Nielsen started measuring the metric in 2013 — beating the "Breaking Bad" finale (127 million impressions).

The special featured a cold open by Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, revivals of vintage sketches like "Celebrity Jeopardy" and "Wayne's World" and the first appearance by former cast member Eddie Murphy on the show in over 30 years, among other segments.
