STEPHENVILLE, Texas — The disturbed man who gunned down the "American Sniper" and his friend doesn't suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder, a forensic psychiatrist testified Thursday.
"It's my opinion that he does not suffer from PTSD," said Dr. Mitchell H. Dunn, who spent more than six hours interviewing former Marine Eddie Ray Routh, 27, in April 2014.
Dunn said there's nothing about Routh's military record that indicated he had experienced trauma while in the field. Instead, Dunn believes that Routh suffers from schizophrenia.
The accused killer told Dunn that he attacked "American Sniper" Chris Kyle and pal Chad Littlefield out of self-defense, because Routh thought they were going to assassinate him at the Texas shooting range they were visiting on Feb. 2, 2013.
But prosecutors offered a different explanation: jealousy and a desire for fame.
"If you kill someone known as the 'American Sniper,' you might feel important," prosecutor Jane Starnes said.
"Yeah, it's possible," Dunn replied.
Prosecutors also allege that Routh understood what he did was wrong because he fled just after the slayings.
And he later told Dunn, "As soon as I did it, I knew I made a mistake."
The defense rested its case Thursday evening.
Routh, who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, will not take the stand.
