Why Deron Williams has ‘no clue’ when he will return

Nets guard Deron Williams talked to the media for the first time since suffering his rib injury, saying he still has no idea when he will be back.

He also acknowledged there was no chance of his playing Monday against the Rockets despite having been listed as probable just hours before tipoff, and admitted he's confused about the Nets' contention his sore left side had nothing to do with what eventually was diagnosed as a fracture of the cartilage portion of his left 12th rib.

"I'm still pretty sore. I don't have a timetable, just taking it one day at a time," Williams said. "There's nothing you can do, really. They're doing some laser and heating it up; just rest. Other than that, there's nothing really you can do.

"As of right now, no [tests are planned]. What is it? It's fractured rib cartilage, which I didn't know you can do. … I'm not a doctor. I have no clue."

Williams has missed Brooklyn's last three games, and though an expert from NYU told The Post last week similar injuries could take as many as four weeks to heal, the Nets have refused to give a timeline.

Meanwhile, Williams seems to be just as unclear about his prognosis as the media.

He suffered an injury on Jan. 4 in Miami, and despite being listed as probable to play the next day against Dallas, Williams said he barely could breathe and there was never any chance he could have suited up against the Mavericks.

"The next day I wasn't playing for sure. It was a back-to-back, I wasn't going to play the Dallas game," Williams said. "I don't know who they talked to, they didn't talk to me. I don't know who does those things. It's just what they want to say."

The Nets said he was doubtful last Wednesday against Boston with what Brooklyn called a "sore left side," but Williams suited up and played. Perhaps he would have been better sitting out, because he lasted just four minutes before getting hurt and pulling himself out of the game, an injury eventually diagnosed as the fractured rib.

"They say it's separate. I find it kind of weird that I had two rib injuries on the same side back to back games and I've never had a rib injury in my life," said Williams, sounding more than a bit skeptical. "They said they went back over the MRI [exam], the ultrasound they did the first time and they didn't see anything."

Confusing?

"I'm as confused as you," Williams said. "You're not the only one."

It was befuddling to see Williams suffer the injury against Boston without ever getting hit. He would experienced spasms in the Jan. 4 game against the Heat, then got hurt while trying to make a move on Celtics guard Marcus Smart.

"Kind of the same thing I did with Norris Cole. I had Marcus Smart on my shoulder, I don't know what shoulder because it happened so fast.

But I just think his weight and me going up through him, it just kind of. …I don't know what it did or what it didn't, I don't really know," said Williams, adding that the pain he felt against Boston was less than it had been against Miami.

"It was lower. I spasmed. I spasmed the game before, which he told me was a cramp, but I realize was a spasm. And then I spasmed the last game, as well."

Jarrett Jack has thrived in the starting lineup, but the Nets have had to play him too many minutes in Williams' absence and realize they need point guard help and an upgrade over third-stringer Darius Morris.

"Well, you've got to ask [general manager] Billy [King] what he's up to. But we have talked about the needs of the team,'' said Hollins. "Yes, point guard is one of them."
