One Oregon coach hoping for a scaled-back schedule

DALLAS — Proponents of an expanded playoff system may not like to hear this, but college football needs to scale back its schedule not increase it, according to Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost.

"This is a 15-game season now. I think it's too long," said Frost, a national championship-winning quarterback at Nebraska. "It used to be nine games, then 10 games, then 11 games, then a championship, then a championship and a conference championship. Now it's up to 15 games. It's almost up to an NFL season."

Frost doesn't have a solution for the problem — "I'm not in a position to make those decisions," he said — but feels change should occur. Injuries have hurt both teams.

Ohio State is down to its third-string quarterback, Cardale Jones, while Oregon has lost receivers Devon Allen and Bralon Addison in addition to left tackle Tyler Johnstone.

"It's funny to me that people spent the entire offseason talking about slowing down fast-tempo offenses because they wanted to play fewer plays in a game, then they add another game to the season," Frost said. "One plus one had to equal two at some point. These kids are durable, but they are still kids. Asking them to play that long of a season is challenge."

Oregon's issues at wide receiver began before the season, with Addison, the team's returning leader in receptions, tearing his ACL in the spring.

But the junior, who is now fully participating in practice with the team, could be considered to suit up against the Buckeyes, following Allen's injury in the Rose Bowl and Darren Carrington's suspension.

Frost said Addison is "healthy and ready to go" but with the receiver eligible to play two more seasons, the team is reluctant to have him burn an entire season of eligibility by playing one game.

Though he doesn't expect to play, Addison said "a final decision hasn't been made" and added he would be willing to lose a year of his college career in order to play in the biggest game of his life.

"If something happens and the team needed me, I would," Addison said. "This is the game you dream of growing up."

Ohio State wide receiver Devin Smith was sick and missed media day, but Ohio State coach Urban Meyer doesn't expect his health to be an issue.

"He'll be fine for the game," Meyer said. "We just wanted to hydrate him, and he wasn't feeling good."
