Judge lets couple’s arranged-marriage dowry serve as prenup

A Staten Island judge is letting an arranged-marriage dowry stand as a virtual prenup — saying the measly $20,000 a Brookdale Hospital oncologist agreed to pay to his Egyptian-born wife is all she gets in their divorce.

The doctor, identified only by his initials H.T. in court papers, married a woman 14 years younger in a religious ceremony in 2007.

Her family received a $5,000 dowry and the wife was promised $20,000 in what's known as a deferred dowry if there was a divorce.

The terms were outlined in an Islamic marriage certificate and later in a prenup the husband wrote himself using a "how to" book, according to court papers.

He filed for divorce against his wife, A.E., in 2013.

In the suit, she calls the payout "unconscionable" and based on fraud because she had no idea her husband made over $275,000 a year.

Judge Catherine DiDomenico shot down the wife's bid to overturn the prenup claiming the woman, although jobless, had an American education and could have hired a lawyer to review the document.

The couple has three kids and the husband currently pays only $2,000 a month in child support, plus the mortgage and utilities for their home.

The wife's lawyer, Catherine Bridge, declined to comment.

The husband's attorney did not return a message.
