If this isn't rock bottom for the Nets, it's close.
Playing at home against one of the worst teams in the NBA in a game they desperately needed to win, the Nets collapsed in the fourth quarter, once again seeing their offense shrivel up when it counted on their way to losing 90-88 to the 76ers in front of 16,172 inside Barclays Center on Friday night.
The Nets (16-20) now have lost four in a row, and beginning Saturday night in Detroit start a stretch when 13 of their next 17 games come against teams currently in line for the playoffs — a run of games that could determine whether or not Brooklyn will join them there.
That's why, even more than normal, the Nets needed to win this one against the hapless Sixers (6-29), who gave themselves more breathing room in their race with the Knicks to not finish with the worst record in the NBA.
The Nets were happy to help, as after a Bojan Bogdanovic layup with 4:49 remaining gave them an 83-78 lead, they only got one more basket the rest of the way – a floater by Brook Lopez that tied the game at 88 with 25.6 seconds left.
But after tying the game up, the Nets promptly allowed the Sixers to retake the lead thanks to their pair of 2013 lottery picks — Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel. After Carter-Williams blew by Jarrett Jack (14 points, 10 assists), he wrapped a pass around Mason Plumlee (15 points, 15 rebounds) into Noel's waiting hands, who slammed it home with 3.2 seconds remaining to give Philadelphia back the lead.
Brooklyn then had a chance to tie or win the game at the buzzer, but the 76ers kept Alan Anderson from inbounding the ball to their usual option in clutch situations, Joe Johnson, forcing him to throw a pass to Lopez about 30 feet from the basket.
Noel nearly stole the ball on the inbounds, and then harassed Lopez into an awful-looking fall-away 3-pointer that never had a prayer of going in, sending the Sixers into celebrations and the Nets to trudge off the court wondering when their next win will come — and how long they'll be able to hang onto one of the final playoff spots in the pathetic Eastern Conference.
