Back in the day it wasn't unusual to see Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster or Diana Ross at boxing events at Madison Square Garden. That celebrity atmosphere returns Friday night when Roc Nation Boxing stages its first event at the Garden Theater.
Jay Z, Rihanna, Carmelo Anthony, Victor Cruz and CC Sabathia and others among the Roc Nation family and friends are expected to be in attendance for what's being called a throne boxing event. Unbeaten Dusty Hernandez-Harrison from Washington will face New Yorker Tommy Rainone in the main event for the WBC Continental Americas welterweight championship. The featured undercard bout has Tureano Johnson challenging Alex Theran for the WBC silver middleweight championship. The fights will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1, the first of a three-fight deal.
Harrison-Hernandez (24-0, 13 KOs) was among the first boxers signed by Roc Nation before it merged with Gary Shaw Productions this week. He is a promising prospect still a few years away from fighting for a serious title but worthy of our attention. Rainone is 22-5 with 4 KOs overall, but 9-1-1 over his last 11 fights.
"The biggest thing obviously that I've got to do is win and do what the people want to see," Harrison-Hernandez said. "They'd like to see a knockout, but I need to show all of the potential I have at 20 years old. I need to show something that people will want to watch again."
The newly formed boxing arm of Roc Nation Sports hopes to create an environment fans will want to enjoy again. In addition to a promising a number of celebrities who will be attendance, the show will include musical acts, DJ Mustard, a special performance by Fabolous with Voice of New York Angie Martinez serving as host.
"We want to really amp up the fan experience at the event," said David Itskowitch, the head of the boxing division for Roc Nation Sports. "There will be other bells and whistles at the event that I have not even gotten into that are going to make things even more enjoyable for fans and to keep the fans engaged. … Yes, they are coming in to see a fight, but we want to give the more than the fights when they go to see a fight."
Hernandez-Harrison is looking forward to matching skills against Rainone. "I think it is a perfect fight for me to develop my career," Hernandez-Harrison said. "He is not one of those guys that comes right at you. He's slick and crafty. That's perfect for me right now."
