Quick start on $425M Finger Lakes casino

Now that's a shovel-ready grab for cash.

Work started Friday on the $425 million, Las Vegas-style Lago Resort & Casino Hotel in the Finger Lakes region — just two days after the state approved three new upstate gambling dens.

"They are moving equipment on the site as we speak," Thomas Wilmot, head of the development company behind the ambitious venture, told The Syracuse Post-Standard.

"The following week we'll really get rolling," said Wilmot, whose company is wasting no time looking to separate high and low rollers from their cash.

"It's full bore ahead, and hopefully, our guys can deliver, and in 12 months, we'll be open," he said.

The timetable — if achieved — would be remarkable for a project of its size.

The developer told the paper that steel had been bought and that contracts for the foundation and roof are already in place for the 85-acre complex near Interstate 90, midway between Syracuse and Rochester.

Lago will feature slots, poker and other table games, a 200-plus room, four-star hotel, five "world class" restaurants serving "NY Pizza," steak, seafood and house wines from local vintners, according to its Web site.

There also will be a 2,200-seat theater where both national and local acts will take the stage, amenities the developers hope will lure customers from the Syracuse and Rochester metro areas as well as tourists from Canada and across the state.

"We believe this facility will be comparable to what you will see in Las Vegas," Wilmot said, adding that the architectural style, however, would match that of the region, south of Lake Ontario in Seneca County.

But Wilmot and the other two operators still need to get casino permits from the state.

A group called CasinoFreeTyre — after the town where it will be located — is still circulating petitions to stop the gaming hub.

But with Gov. Cuomo's enthusiastic support and repeated pledges to create jobs and revive the upstate economy, the licenses are a sure bet, an industry source told The Post.

"They're all going to get them," the source said, referring to casinos that were also approved on the Mohawk River in Schenectady and near Monticello in the Catskills.

All three were approved Wednesday, when a a siting panel of the New York Gaming Commission recommended they be licensed.

"They're all going to be moving as fast as they can," the source said about developers of all three casinos.

The approvals stirred controversy, coming the same day the state moved to ban fracking — a method for extracting natural gas deemed safe in dozens of other states — for supposed health risks.

Fracking advocates said that would have created more jobs and generated more economic growth than casinos, which are struggling in New Jersey and Connecticut.
