On a night full of pomp, circumstance and protest inside and out of Barclays Center, the Nets did their best to try and dethrone LeBron James and the Cavaliers.
But after hanging with Cleveland for the first 2 ¹/₂ half quarters, the Nets — playing without Joe Johnson (flu) and Brook Lopez (back) — ran out of steam, and the Cavaliers closed the third with a 24-6 run and went on to a 110-88 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 17,732.
Perhaps it was coincidental that, with the score tied at 61 midway through the third quarter, Prince William and Kate Middleton took their seats across from the Nets bench and Cleveland immediately began to impose its will on the game. Or perhaps it was a matter of the NBA's resident King wanting to show off for the royals sitting courtside.
James had opened the third quarter by scoring Cleveland's first nine points, but then helped extend the Cavaliers' advantage by passing, assisting on five Cleveland baskets — including capping off the quarter with back-to-back alley-oops to forward Tristan Thompson for emphatic dunks.
By the time the quarter had ended, the Nets had fallen apart, going from making it a competitive game to one that's final outcome was a formality. The only exciting moment left for the fans came between the third and fourth quarters, when the royal couple of New York — Jay Z and Beyonce — walked across the court from their seats next to the Nets bench to meet-and-greet with the royal couple from Great Britain.
It wasn't a surprise the Nets immediately fell apart in the third once they lost Mirza Teletovic for the remainder of a game with both a right hip pointer and a facial laceration which required four stitches.
With the Nets already missing Johnson and Lopez, they needed all the scoring they could get, and Teletovic had already given them 11 points and four rebounds in 22 minutes after moving into the starting lineup.
But once he was finished, the Nets saw their offense dry up. They missed 13 of their final 16 shots in the third quarter, allowing the Cavaliers to get the breathing space they needed to put the game out of reach.
Kevin Garnett had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Nets (8-11), while Dion Waiters scored 26 points off the bench to lead the Cavaliers (12-7), who have now won seven straight, while James had 18 and seven assists.
