Jon Lester rejects Giants, lets them down easy

SAN DIEGO — It was bad news delivered gracefully.

Jon Lester bypassed the traditional method of having his representatives tell the Giants they were no longer in the bidding for his services. Instead, Lester called San Francisco officials directly to tell them that he appreciated their pursuit.

So with the Giants out, it appeared the championship round for Lester was a fascinating one pitting the Cubs vs. the Red Sox, Wrigley vs. Fenway and — perhaps most intriguing — Theo Epstein vs. his old employers.

Epstein was the Red Sox general manager when Lester broke in with Boston in 2006. But Epstein left the franchise with fractured relationships, notably with team president Larry Lucchino.

Epstein is now the Cubs' president of baseball operations, and it would be quite a blow to Boston if he could make Lester the anchor of his rotation.

One veteran agent said, "Theo might be able to handle finishing second for [Masahiro] Tanaka or [Yasiel] Puig or [Russell] Martin, but he doesn't want to finish second to Larry."

A person familiar with the negotiations told me Monday night that Lester will have six- and seven-year options — all believed to be around the $25 million annual range — and might not take the top bid.
